The best movie you’ve never seen: Joe Versus the Volcano 🌋 It’s a goofy, corny romcom from the 90s with a young Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. But what sets it apart is the subtle depth it has in capturing what it’s like to be a young adult finding your way. Sometimes it feels like every aspect of your life is going off the rails, or you’re just missing the mark overall. That’s normal. In your early to mid 20s, you’re going to have health issues, difficult career choices, financial burdens, failed relationships, trouble with family, and the list goes on. BUT, this time really is what you make of it. Yeah, sometimes things suck, but there are also some of your best friendships yet, new skills and hobbies that you discover, new places and new people that you meet, restoration of relationships with friends and family, and some of your greatest adventures yet. I say all this because you really don’t see this period of your mid-twenties explored in storytelling outside of the highs of it. And they’re there, but Joe Versus the Volcano does a great job of exploring the full range of what that time is like (even if Joe’s supposed to be a bit older)! So, if you’re in your mid-twenties and just need to let your hair down, go watch Joe Versus the Volcano! P.S. Whew! What an amazing @sheleadsmedia conference that was put on by @adriennelgarland and toribarker.creativemarketing. I’m not sure when tickets for next year will go on sale, but as soon as they do I will post it because you don’t want to miss this next year and I am sure it will sell out!! It will also be their 10th year of doing this conference, so I’m sure it will be bigger and better than ever. I am still unpacking everything I learned as well as just enjoying the residual excitement I am feeling after speaking at the conference myself. But full disclosure, there was a moment leading up to the conference that I felt really overwhelmed - the house was a mess, we were down to the last few squares of toilet paper (anyone relate?) and I was definitely feeling nervous about the upcoming event where I would be speaking in public (I didn’t have just a few butterflies in my belly, I had a whole flock!). I remember having this thought pan across my mind, “I wish all I had to worry about was buying toilet paper and nothing else.” But I know by now not to let those thoughts persist, and I pushed myself to keep going toward those things that scared me. And let me tell you, I am so glad I did. It was such a great experience and I know I grew from the whole thing. I don’t know why (I’m sure there is a scientific reason for it), but it feels so good afterwards when we do the things that are scary! So go do that big hairy scary thing!
