This update builds on our collaboration with Women in Data®, highlighting progress and the path to equity in gender health. Key takeaways from the update include: 🚀Advancements made in the past 12 months: Data collection methodologies have been reviewed with requirements introduced to include both sexes in the experimental design of grant applications involving animals, human tissues, and cells. Alongside this, through the introduction of new government schemes there has been a drive to ensure women’s perspectives contribute to healthcare analysis. 📈Advancements in the private sector: FemTech has played a significant role in improving healthcare outcomes, as well as partnerships between pharmaceutical companies and patient advocacy groups which advocate for the role of women in designing inclusive studies. 💡Further recommendations: Fair representation of women in clinical trials, education and collaborative action for data disaggregation have been pinpointed as areas of focus to effectively narrow the gender health disparity. This post is for everyone who keeps wondering why women's health isn't always a Perfect Score! Recently I had a very interesting conversation on this topic and I realized that there is very little knowledge on the fact that up until 1993 women were not included in clinical trials. Let's dive into it. Historical Oversight: Traditionally, medical research primarily centered on males, assuming that findings in men would universally apply to women. Complexities surrounding hormonal fluctuations and ethical concerns led to women's exclusion, neglecting crucial biological differences between genders. Impact on Healthcare: Excluding women in clinical trials created a ripple effect, resulting in misdiagnoses, ineffective treatments, and adverse reactions. Example, heart disease symptoms in women differ, leading to delayed diagnoses and less effective interventions. Medication dosages, often based on male-centric studies, may not be optimal for females, contributing to healthcare inefficiencies. Ongoing changes: Luckily, there's been a positive shift lately. There's a push for inclusive research, by regulatory bodies, research institutions, and pharmaceutical companies. Recognizing the need for diverse insights, they're actively working to close this gender gap in clinical trials. When I did my initial preclinical studies in mice, focusing on just male cohorts was a common practice to simplify experiments. Now, the landscape has evolved. People understand the necessity of studying gender differences. The female body's complexity does make experiments and trials intricate, but that's precisely why their inclusion is crucial.
