There are many modifiable risk factors for Afib and heart arrhythmias - meaning we can improve the outcomes and the ability to prevent Afib/put it into remission, if we address many of the causes for Afib and heart arrhythmias. ⁠ ⁠ Most often, the causes are multifactorial and we want to make sure we are addressing all potential things that can influence your heart beat regularity.⁠ ⁠ ⭐️ This includes nutrients your heart needs to maintain rhythm through a nutrient sufficient diet.⁠ ⁠ ⭐️ Reducing weight, especially waist circumference, which is metabolically active and increases inflammatory markers. Being overweight is a risk factor for Afib because it increases the pressure inside the main pumping chamber of the heart which can cause abnormal relaxation and potential enlargement of the left atrium.⁠ ⁠ ⭐️ Addressing acid reflux effectively helps prevent the stimulation of the autonomic nerve due to mechanical compression and reduces the risk of local inflammation near the left atrium and lower esophagus, thereby lowering the likelihood of developing atrial fibrillation (AFib).⁠ ⁠ ⭐️ Other modifiable risk factors that need to be optimized well to help prevent Afib are addressing blood pressure (ideal 110/70mmHg), coronary artery disease and cholesterol levels, as well as insulin resistance. ⁠ 
High blood pressure can make the heart muscle thicker and stiff overtime which makes it harder for electrical signals to move through the heart, which can lead to Afib.⁠ ⁠ Elevated levels of apoB, LDL, inflammation, and insulin resistance promote the formation of arterial plaques and increase the likelihood of blood clotting, thereby heightening the risk of complications related to AFib.⁠ ⁠ 👉🏼 All of these are addressed on a truly science based heart healthy diet.⁠ ⁠

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is underdiagnosed and undertreated, which is a big disservice to preventive heart attack risk reduction. PAD is a vascular disease that leads to narrowing and potential blockage of the arteries outside of the heart and brain, particularly in the abdominal aorta, iliac, and lower extremity arteries. Plaque buildup, atherosclerosis, in these arteries, is the most common cause of PAD.  When the lower extremity arteries are narrowed due to having too much artery clogging cholesterol in the blood vessels, it can lead to leg pain called claudication. Claudication typically presents as leg pain, discomfort, tightness, cramping when walking, or burning in the calf, thigh, hip or buttocks that happens at a similar level of walking day to day, disappears when standing for several minutes ,and happens again when walking resumes. Many times people notice it when they see a change in their inability to walk as fast or as long as usual. If you have symptoms of PAD, please ask your doctor for further assessment. Untreated PAD can also lead to limb amputation. Some MODIFIABLE risk factors include: smoking (4x increased risk), diabetes (1.5-4x increased risk), high cholesterol (2x increased risk), high blood pressure (2.5-4x increased risk), metabolic syndrome, and high inflammatory markers. ⭐️In order to PREVENT and properly manage peripheral artery disease, we must take a PROACTIVE approach to optimize your cardiometabolic risk factors and take care of your blood vessel health. ❤️ A science based heart healthy nutrition and lifestyle plan is imperative to optimize blood flow and arterial stiffness to manage cardiovascular disease. We often look at chronic diseases in isolation, which can cause other health complications. I'm a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. Triglycerides are a type of fat that travel in the bloodstream and are associated with increased risk of heart disease. High triglyceride levels are linked to low HDL (good) cholesterol, high LDL (bad) cholesterol, and excess abdominal fat. Factors that can raise triglycerides include diet high in carbohydrates and alcohol consumption. Exercise is an effective way to lower triglyceride levels by using them as an energy source. The Heart ❤️ is the organ in your chest that pumps the blood around your body. The muscle that pumps blood received from veins into arteries throughout the body. The blood flows from the systemic veins into the right atrium, thence to the right ventricle, from which it is pumped to the lungs and then returned into the left atrium, thence to the left ventricle, from which it is driven into the systemic arteries. The heart is thus functionally composed of two hearts: the right heart and the left heart. The right heart consists of the right atrium, which receives deoxygenated blood from the body, and the right ventricle, which pumps the deoxygenated blood to the lungs under low pressure; and the left heart, which consists of the left atrium, which receives oxygenated blood from the lung, and the left ventricle, which pumps the oxygenated blood out to the body under high pressure. To help prevent heart disease, you can: Eat healthy Get active Stay at a healthy weight Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke Control your cholesterol and blood pressure Drink alcohol only in moderation Manage stress Always ask yourself this: Am I at risk for heart disease? Anyone can get heart disease, but you’re at higher risk if you: Have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes Smoke Are overweight or have obesity  Don't get enough physical activity Don't eat a healthy diet  Your age and family history also affect your risk for heart disease. Your risk is higher if:  You’re a woman over age 55 You’re a man over age 45 Your father or brother had heart disease before age 55 Your mother or sister had heart disease before age 65 But the good news is there's a lot you can do to prevent heart disease. What Is Heart Disease? Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. When people talk about heart disease, they’re usually talking about coronary heart disease (CHD). It’s also sometimes called coronary artery disease (CAD). This is the most common type of heart disease. When someone has CHD, the coronary arteries (tubes) that take blood to the heart are narrow or blocked. This happens when cholesterol and fatty material, called plaque, build up inside the arteries. Several things can lead to plaque building up inside your arteries, including: Too much cholesterol in the blood High blood pressure Smoking Too much sugar in the blood because of diabetes When plaque blocks an artery, it’s hard for blood to flow to the heart. A blocked artery can cause chest pain or a heart attack. Take steps today to lower your risk of heart disease.

Reduce Inflammation to Prevent Heart Disease Ever felt a bit bored by the cholesterol talk related to heart health? Well, get ready for a twist. Recent studies indicate that inflammation might be just as key in battling heart disease. It’s been found that fighting inflammation, even if cholesterol levels stay the same, decreases heart attack and stroke risks significantly. In the JUPITER study, older adults with high inflammation but normal cholesterol, who took statins, saw less heart attacks and strokes1. Another trial, CANTOS, showed a 15% drop in heart attacks or strokes for those with a prior heart attack and high inflammation after using an anti-inflammatory drug1. Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is a heart rhythm disorder. In AFib, the atria (upper chambers of the heart) beat out of rhythm with the ventricles (lower chambers of the heart). This results in an irregular heartbeat called ‘fibrillation’. ⁠ ⁠ In other words, the heart may be too fast, too slow, or skip beats altogether. As a result, the heart can’t pump blood as well as it should, and it is more susceptible to blood clotting. ⁠ ⁠ AFib is a very common disorder. It affects up to 6 million adults in the United States and approximately 34 million people worldwide. It is the most prevalent heart arrhythmia. ⁠ ⁠ Many people with AFib are at a higher risk of death and disability as it increases the risk of stroke, dementia and heart failure. Heart disease isn't always obvious—it quietly brews beneath the surface, causing significant harm without much warning. Most times, people do not realize they are at risk for heart disease because they are not told, until they get a heart disease diagnosis. Inflammation is like the silent villain in the heart disease saga—it plays a major role in how things unfold. It silently causes damage in the background, contributing to issues like clogged arteries, weakened heart muscles, irregular heart rhythms, and more. Today, I am pointing out six conditions that can sneakily up your risk for heart disease, if not managed. I want you to be aware so that you can take proactive action. ⚠️ I emphasize the "if not managed" component to empower you to take action today to reduce your risk of future cardiovascular disease and/or complications. ⭐️ Inflammation can show up in many different ways and we want to make sure we are assessing it by: a) Addressing any pro-inflammatory condition b) Checking your waist circumference at home (hint: it is NOT your pants size!). Even if your waist appears to be a typical size, it's essential to measure it separately. That's because excess belly fat, even if not visibly apparent, can be metabolically active and produce pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to inflammation in your body. c) Checking for inflammation in the body via blood work such as hsCRP, uric acid, fibrinogen, and GGT. If these are high, identifying the cause and implementing proper management including science based nutrition. 👉🏼 Action point: Take a soft measuring tape, stand neutrally, and measure around your belly button. Generally, aiming for under 35 inches (for women) or 40 inches (for men). November is Diabetes Awareness Month and I wanted to take the time to bring awareness about the connection between diabetes and heart disease. ⁠ ⁠ Type 2 diabetes is an independent risk factor for heart disease. Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of diabetic cardiomyopathy, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.⁠ ⁠ Why may this be? ⁠ ⁠ Diabetes and heart disease have many shared risk factors such as insulin resistance, abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels, inflammation and blood clot formation. And when blood sugars are persistently elevated they can damage blood vessels leading to endothelial dysfunction, heart disease and failure. ⁠ ⁠ What can we do about it?⁠ ⁠ ⭐️Type 2 diabetes and heart disease have epigenetic and lifestyle factors that can be optimally managed to reduce the risk of health complications. The Link Between Long COVID and Muscle Weakness Written by Krystie Linares MD Long COVID is characterized by the persistence of symptoms for weeks or months after having COVID-19. One of the most frequent symptoms is muscle weakness, which can be debilitating and even cause a person to have difficulties exercising or performing day-to-day tasks. In this article, we will shed light on the connection between long COVID and muscle weakness, exploring the causes, symptoms, and management options. What is long COVID, and what are its symptoms? Post-COVID-19 syndrome, or long COVID, refers to the persistence of symptoms for at least three months after first contracting the COVID-19 virus (acute infection). It is estimated that approximately 57% of adults in the U.S. had COVID-19 at some point, and out of those, around 9% are currently experiencing long COVID symptoms. The most common symptoms reported by people who suffer from long COVID include fatigue, breathing difficulties, and muscle weakness, which can make it difficult to exercise or even perform everyday tasks. What increases the risk of long COVID? Anyone infected by COVID-19 can develop long COVID, even those who were asymptomatic at first. Researchers are still looking into the factors that increase a person’s chance of developing long COVID; however, it seems to be more frequent in: -- People who had severe acute COVID-19 disease. -- Unvaccinated people. -- Individuals with underlying medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, obesity, asthma, etc.).
