A 10-year plan is the kind of visionary approach this field needs.

In 2020, CHCF launched a targeted effort to improve health care, and thus health outcomes, for Black Californians regardless of their income or the type of insurance coverage they have. This approach recognizes the impacts of anti-Black racism on the health of Black Californians across income and socioeconomic class. See our current request for proposals (RFP), which solicits projects that address anti-Black racism in the health care system. CHCF seeks to support five to eight projects that have the potential to accelerate change in delivery system policies and practices in the near term. Applicants may apply for grants of up to $150,000 for a two-year grant period to implement and assess the impact of efforts to improve equitable medical care for Black Californians in public or private clinics, hospitals, and medical practices. I always enjoy getting out of the home office and onto a stage for an engaging conversation. Last week, it was at the Association of Washington Business Spring Meeting in Vancouver, Washington. I moderated a timely discussion with former WA Sec. of State Kim Wyman and WA Lt. Gov Denny Heck on the topic of Civic Health and how to "disagree better." Two takeaways from the panelists: "If I had a wish for politics in the modern era, we could get back to a place where governing was valued and rewarded." -- Kim Wyman The three elements of strong civic health are: "Respectful discourse, trying to reach principled compromises and disagreeing better." -- Lt. Gov. Heck

Timely, urgent. "PACE is about investing in people’s well-being, keeping them as well as possible for as long as possible. It offers older adults the chance to live at home with a higher quality of care — and of life. The current model serves primarily low-income seniors; however, the bigger opportunity is to expand it to include all chronically ill older adults. Such models will be useful as Congress crafts legislation to expand PACE, as health care organizations plan how to launch PACE programs efficiently and effectively, and as program leaders and managers seek to develop the nuts and bolts of care that offers healing to patients and energizes staff."

Communities of color face a disproportionate burden of poor health outcomes due to limited access to healthcare, deep-rooted mistrust stemming from a history of discrimination within the medical field, and other systemic issues. What’s more, POC are often underrepresented in clinical trials and research studies.    Tranquil Clinical Research , a company that recognizes this historical disparity, is actively taking steps to address the gap. Recently, the Houston-based research clinic secured a $500,000 working loan through the Abbott-LISC Initiative to Support Diverse Businesses in Health. We asked Mr. Woodruff about what made him join COAST, his vision of COAST's larger mission, and what he hopes other MFTs will find by joining COAST. [Mr. Woodruff] I got involved with COAST after the by-laws change as I was (and am) concerned about state-level information and advocacy for our profession when the existing state organizations were unsupported or taxed out of existence. 2.   Describe COAST's mission in a way that feels meaningful to you. [Mr. Woodruff] The mission of COAST is to ensure a place for emerging and existing systemic therapists to go for networking, information, advocacy, and support with state and local-level knowledge and insight. 3.   What would you like future COAST members to find in COAST? [Mr. Woodruff] I would like members to find a welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable home to support folks in their work as systemic therapy professionals. 4.   What's one good reason more MFTs should consider joining COAST? [Mr. Woodruff] COAST remains focused on the day-to-day needs of systemic therapy professionals and students as we, as a distinct minority in numbers and theory, advance the value and visibility of our profession. #mft #systemictherapy #systemictherapists
