Mr Lee said he felt “a sense of satisfaction and completeness” as he prepared to hand over Singapore in good order to his successor. Getting Singapore's politics right would be "absolutely crucial" in this, he said. "Please understand: We have succeeded, and Singapore has made exceptional economic and social gains, because our system is exceptional. "The system does not have to fail outright for Singapore to get into trouble. Even if we just become ordinary, average, we will already be in serious trouble." Thank you PM Lee Hsien Loong for dedicating the last 40 years of his life to Singapore. No matter the grievances - what he and his team did for the country should never be belittled and having good leaders is what SG is today. It is also a reminder that election campaigning has now started :) PM Lee's emphasis on trust and stability in the government is vital, but it's essential to recognize that these qualities must be continuously earned. During my recent visit to Singapore, I was profoundly inspired by Lee Kuan Yew's transformative leadership that shaped the nation's success story. His clear vision, coupled with unwavering dedication, laid the groundwork for Singapore's remarkable rise to prominence. Kuan Yew's firm stance against corruption set a crucial precedent. By implementing similar anti-corruption measures, African nations can foster transparency and attract much-needed investment for sustainable growth. Moreover, his strategic economic policies, focused on attracting foreign investment, offer valuable insights for #Africa's development trajectory. By prioritizing growth and creating conducive business environments, African countries can emulate Singapore's economic success. Additionally, Kuan Yew's investment in education and skills development empowered Singaporeans for global competitiveness. Happy 56th ASEAN Day! Join in the celebration with various festivity tools (twibbons etc) and rewatch the streaming of the commemoration this morning at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, at the link below. This includes speeches by the President of the Republic of Indonesia and the Secretary-General of ASEAN, as well as the "potong tumpeng" ceremony (the cutting of the giant yellow rice cone, a symbol of celebration in Indonesia), also joined on stage by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The President, in his speech, called ASEAN as a demonstration of harmony in diversity. After highlighting the challenges faced by the region today (uneven global recovery and prolonged major power rivalry), he expressed his confidence that the region can overcome these challenges as long as we stay united. He expressed his hope that ASEAN will be an epicentrum of growth that will bring value added benefits to the people, in the region and globally, building on its strong assets of robust growth, demographic dividends, and global confidence in its economic potential. He closed by emphasising that "this big ship (ASEAN) must continue to sail. This big ship cannot go under. This is our responsibility to the hundreds of millions of our people on board." As ASEAN grows in economic heft and global standing, its responsibility too expands, to the region, the world, and most importantly to its own peoples. "May the best man win." That's the common refrain of many as we headed to the polls to vote for Singapore's next President. And the best man has clearly won. Being the presumptive frontrunner, the margin of victory becomes important. Hence, I am most cheered by the sheer number of Singaporeans who voted for him, in excess of a 2/3 supermajority, as it confirms his overwhelming legitimacy, popularity and mandate. More importantly, this is a win for respect for all. This is a win for experience, track record, capability and expertise. This is a win for a thoughtful, calm and composed temperament. This is a win for multiracialism and multiculturalism. This is a win for national cohesion, solidarity, and unity. This is a win for optimism for a better and brighter future for Singapore. And this is a win for international confidence in Singapore's stability and standing. Ultimately, this is a huge and resounding win for Singapore and all Singaporeans.
