Much has been said about our new Prime Minister, as well as our now Senior Minister, so I won't add to it. I thought instead to speak to the things less said, about a historic moment that's happened only three times in our history. First, the sheer dramaless-ness of it all needs to be appreciated. Transitions and successions are rarely so, and due credit needs to be given to our entire system for keeping it drama free. Some in the news might even call it all a bit boring. But as a citizen, I'll take boring anytime. Second, unsaid (and sometimes unseen) is how the system is able to pull off organising such a historic ceremony in basically one month. I daresay it's something only Singapore can do - the logistics, catering, security, transport, protocol, public broadcasting, etc and of course, the work of newsrooms. All done appropriately, with no drama. Congratulations to everyone involved in organising it. It's a system that works reliably and quietly until it doesn't. And it's important we recognise it when it does. Third, it's surreal how things get quickly back down to work, with the excitement of the past month now firmly history. Again, so very typically pragmatic, but a sign that things are working.

Insightful: Lawrence Wong is the first PM born after Singapore's independence in 1965. I have one ask: Please keep the government spending small. Let's keep the dynamism high and keep the various departments hungry. Raising tax, increasing budget and welfare is a slippery slope. Patches can become permanent features quickly.

Together, Foward Singapore! I think Inclusivity and Unity will be key. How can we hear the voices of all residents in Singapore? How do we ensure no opinion is ignored, and no concerns is too small to disregard? Only with correct attitude, we can truely empathise with people who are different from oneself. Very often, we forgot that all people think and react differently. We cannot comprehend the struggle that prevents others from reacting as expected. We are all formed by our culture, our upbringing, our community, our experiences, our setbacks, our self-image built from young, our fear and many more. It is heartening to see that currently, many of the national topics are less of achievement but more on the mental well-being and the understanding of self. This will definitely bring more of the human perspective into our day-to-day interactions. Let's us take Singapore Forward - Together! #mentalwellbeing #singapore #inclusivity #community #unity

A hugely significant moment for Singapore, even though this transition has been under preparation and well signalled for several years. Prime Minister Lee may well have preferred to step back some time ago but unforeseen events led him to delay his departure out of his sense of responsibility - he always gave me the sense that political leadership was for him a duty he accepted rather than something he actively sought. Doubtless like his father he will continue to advise his successor either in an official "Minister Mentor" capacity or informally. Singapore's continued development over the last 20 years has been remarkable. Its geographical position at the crossroads of Asia gives it natural advantages. But there is nothing inevitable about its success. Its exceptionally talented leaders are constantly surveying the horizon to spot emerging economic, political and technological trends and understand the risks and opportunities they present to Singapore. The political system, which has aspects that would be unacceptable in Europe, affords them the luxury of being able to develop and execute long-term plans, including through the use of very large numbers of cheap migrant workers. But Singapore is far from the unregulated, capitalist nirvana some woudl have us believe. 80% of Singaporeans live in social housing, with carefully controlled ethnic quotas in each housing development. The State is an active player in the economy through parastatal corporations, constant investment in infrastructure and more recently R&D, and a ruthless approach to attracting foreign investment and technologies into those sectors identified as key to whatever has been identified as the next stage of Singapore's development. The approach is not replicable but there are things smaller countries can learn from it, for example the role of the Economic Development Board, the relationship between government and business, or the approach to further education. Lawrence Wong has very big shoes to fill. But the system and structures he inherits provide an enviable foundation on which to build his own legacy.
