Tragedies occur around the world everyday which manifest in so many different forms, like the devastating impact of war and the social and economic injustices that are imposed on millions around the world by corrupt governments, injustices which include the failure of many states to provide adequate education and accessible healthcare for its citizens, and that prevent the rights of citizens to get justice and enjoy freedom of speech. Unfortunately, the injustice doesn’t stop there, since they also manifest in many workplaces, where unfair wages and poor working standards and conditions are commonplace, and in some cases, forced labour and slavery exist.
When I consider these realities, I see how I was and still am privileged to grow up and live in a developed country with a democratically elected government, administering services through excellent institutions, many of which are well recognised around the world for working towards peace and the provision of fairness, as well as aiming to provide economic prosperity, the promotion and facilitation of commerce using sustainable business models which enable jobs as well as creating wealth, and equality of opportunity for all within employment. We have some excellent laws for protecting the rights of citizens in the workplace which of course, we should always uphold, defend, and robustly implement. This is extremely important for ensuring transparency, building trust, and for encouraging more employee voice, engagement, trust, and motivation which helps create excellent organisational culture, deliver on objectives, and helps to create great places to work. Organisations which demonstrate commitment to fairness, equality of opportunity, and to investing in people and the promotion of their professional & personal development and successes, are those that embody the spirit of our progressive ideals.
I am thankfull for the many opportunities that i’ve had presented to me and which continue to be afforded to me, having a loving family, a good education and access to free healthcare, as well as the many development opportunities and fun and exciting experiences which were and still are provided to me in organisations throughout my career, both past and present. I am so grateful for all of these things, and to those individuals who invested and continue to invest in me, sharing their valuable knowledge and skills, and encouraging me to do well in life and work.
Whilst nothing is ever perfect and we are never always satisfied with all aspects of our lives and careers, we certainly have so much more to be thankfull for, things that should never be taken for granted.
"As you start and end your day, be thankful for every little thing in your life. You will come to realize how blessed you truly are."
