"In digital and AI transformations, start with the problem, not the technology". The title of this podcast by McKinsey senior partner Eric Lamarre caught me immediately — and if you're an executive grappling with how to use data and AI to create real and properly-prioritized business value at scale, the piece is well worth a read. Here are three lines that particularly resonated with me. On using the right AI, not the hottest: "If you’re a consumer packaged goods company, you can use gen AI in many places, but good old revenue growth management is about advanced analytics on pricing, demand, and promotions." On building a holistic view of the problem: "Whenever you develop a technology, there will be a secondary effect somewhere in the system that will prevent you from fully capturing the value." On the value created by technologists who understand business context: "If you’re a data engineer, a software engineer, or a machine-learning engineer working on a business problem, you can develop the right technology two to four times faster if you understand the context of that problem."
