I am intrigued by what Kaiser will achieve with Risant. Starting with Geisinger, a like-minded IDN partner, is a logical (and probably the only practical) first step. I am hoping they might in future embrace more traditional hospital-based health systems for whom necessary model changes would be extremely wrenching. If they can do that successfully, this could mark a sea change in US healthcare. The recently announced General Catalyst (HATCo) ambitions to purchase a health system represent an equally ambitious and bold move. Does Risant feel like a safer bet than HATCo? We all admire Kaiser and Geisinger for their achievements, but we can observe they have not been able to expand despite having tried in the past. Will this be their way of doing so more successfully? Will HATCo succeed in creating new models for the health system, or go the way of Haven and other well-known attempts from “outside the system”? Both Risant and HATCo bring strategic platform capabilities to health systems looking to find alternatives, as does my former employer Optum with its health system partnerships. My hope is that all these approaches, and others, can contribute to further strengthening our hospital-based health systems as we continue the long and winding road towards value based care.
