This month we are featuring Miguel Mora-Becerra! Miguel is our Learning Community North Parent Time Instructor, and here is what he has to say: Q: What inspired you to work at The Learning Community and how do you continue to stay motivated and passionate in your role? A: I was inspired to work at the Learning Community Center because I wanted to help families in the community create better relationships with their children and learn new skills. Continuing my work becomes easier as I get to know each family and how I can continue supporting their goals. Q: Can you share a particularly memorable experience or success story from your time working at The Learning Community that has had a lasting impact on you? A: A memorable experience that I've had working at the Learning Community was leading parents and their children though STEM activities in our last week of summer camp. Seeing families create and launch their own catapults was both fun and exciting knowing that these are moments parents will always remember with their children.

Is your teen or young adult preparing to transition to college or high school this fall? New environments often bring significant stress, self-doubt, and fear for students. Adjusting to new academic demands, making new friends, and navigating an unfamiliar social environment can be daunting. The transition to college, in particular, is a common challenge, even for students who excelled in high school. College presents a different level of academic rigor, coupled with major life changes such as moving to a new place and forming new social connections. Many students are not fully prepared for these changes, which can lead to feelings of sadness, loneliness, and disengagement. To help your child thrive, we have developed a virtual summer life skills program specifically designed to ease these transitions. By being proactive and setting your child up for success, you can make a significant positive impact on their college or high school experience. The research tells us that having books at home stops summer learning loss AND that children in under-resourced communities have fewer books at home. ALL children deserve to have access to books and reading, and at Books Are Wings, we're working to build the libraries of young readers across Rhode Island. "Prioritizing learning as a year-round commitment, and implementing programs that support summer learning, limit summer learning loss, which in turn reduces the achievement gap." (BU Journal of Graduate Studies in Education, Volume 14, Issue 2, 2022) You can have a big impact in the life of a child this summer by supporting our Stop the Summer Slide Campaign. Give today, and help make reading a key part of every child's summer experience: https://bit.ly/3XfopGi
