3rd March 2024 | Sunday Chit-Chat Session with MCMC! Grateful for the enlightening encounter with MCMC's executives, Amirul Azrin Amiruddin and Haryati Suradi at the careers fair! Their warmth and vibrancy instantly set the tone for an engaging discussion that reshaped my perception of MCMC's role. Contrary to my initial assumptions, MCMC transcends mere media policies – it's a driving force behind Malaysia's rapidly evolving convergent communication and multimedia landscape. Their extensive connections with industry giants underscored the company's pivotal role in shaping the nation's digital future. What truly intrigued me was the breadth of MCMC's job scope. Yesterday, our Managing Partner, Geoffrey Imende, delivered a thought-provoking message on behalf of our Senior Partner, Professor Githu Muigai SC during the Corporate Governance Career Fair Day at the University of Nairobi. In his own words - "As you consider your career choice, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Because mistakes will be made. By most of you. That is part of life. Learn from those mistakes to do better next time. It is no wonder that a career is undertaken in the course of one’s life. It is not an event. A career gives you the chance to utilize your skills, interests, knowledge, and ambitions to solve societal problems as well as earn a living. To the lucky few, the decision is a simple one. When you have clarity of thought. Ultimately, some career paths are taken out of pragmatism. Career paths are not always linear. Life may force you to take detours. It is therefore important to be deliberate about the decision you make. Look inwards first. Introspect. Who are you. What are your natural abilities and your learnt skills. What do you enjoy doing. What are your values. Your goals. Today the TRI Academy held a Career Awareness Fair at our beautiful Campus Kilpatrick location. This event was hosted by one of our most progressive service partners Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) . It was an amazing event that allowed all 20 of our transitional age young men the opportunity to hear about different career, vocational and educational pathways. More importantly, these pathways were presented by system impacted people that have made powerful, impactful, and ongoing progress in their own lives. Young adult takeaways. ‘I didn’t realize that those possibilities still existed for someone like me’. The other thing that many may have realized is that the possibilities are limitless as they heard from numerous professionals that they were engaged in many different side businesses outside of their primary profession or that they were in the process of pursuing a second or third or fourth endeavor. Just one take away people should understand is that the doubt or uncertainty around what is possible can be dibilatatting; it is an unnecessary form of cognitive bondage that leads people towards familiar illegal territory. It is proof that system impacts cut much deeper than actual physical institutionalization. This form of mental incarceration or what we call institutionalization needs to reformed. Not just in practice but within our language. It is colonial thinking that binds us from fully embracing our cognitive potential or even being able to see the potential in those that we serve. I hear it among our very best social Justice warriors. It’s a natural disposition to suggest that based on your own professional experience or theoretical perspectives to say, I think they need, if they had and somehow unnatural to allow or guide individuals with such a wide range of issues and at risk behaviors a vehicle for driving their own treatment. I heard someone today suggest identifying people with leadership qualities to help run a youth council. I suggested that they all have the potential to be leaders and we should try to find excercise a to help them discover this on their own. What they need is simple and not colonial. They need exposure, they need opportunities for self discovery and they need basic nourishment (caring & safety). Some might simply need additional time to sort things out. Given time, nourishment, and opportunities to learn and engage these people, each and every one of our young adults has an infinite potential.
