My oldest son Pierce Willardson went to the winter formal dance last night and rocked the red bow tie like a champ! Crazy he turns 17 next month— how’s that even possible? I wouldn’t realize I’m getting older as much if not for my kids growing up so quickly; can you relate to that at all? I love Pierce! He’s got so many amazing qualities! I see these lists all the time about “what you should teach your son or daughter before they’re 18” and I always try to learn something new. Here’s a list for Pierce that I modified recently and saved: 16 RULES TO TEACH YOUR 16 YEAR OLD SON 1. Never shake a man’s hand sitting down. 2. Don’t enter a pool by the stairs. 3. Take pride in your BBQ duty; don’t burn the meat for the party. 4. Always offer to pay for all the expenses for the girl when you’re on a date. 5. Request the late check-out. 6. When entrusted with a secret, keep it. 7. Be loyal and honest to yourself and to others. It’s the personality traits I hold highest in a man 8. Hold your heroes to a higher standard. 9. Return a borrowed car with a full tank of gas. 10. Play with passion or don’t play at all. 11. When shaking hands, grip firmly and look them in the eye. 12. It’s okay to have feelings as a guy; don’t listen to people who tell you to keep them inside your whole life. 13. If you need music and your phone on the beach, you’re missing the point. 14. You marry the girl, you marry her family. 15. Be like a duck. Remain calm on the surface and paddle like crazy underneath. 16. Be a learn-it-all, not a know-it-all. What would you add?

Accept responsibility of your mistakes. When someone upsets you, write out your response, read it, and delete it. Give credit where credit is due. The true test of character is what you do when no one is watching.

I can add one: never do anything that would break your Mom's heart. So many more but thats a solid list right there.
