#Did you think all mushers were men? We’re accustomed to seeing men in the top roles in business, and men continue to dominate in dog sledding. Nevertheless, here are two small women in a big sport—you’ll notice I am taller though Nancy’s teams were bigger. Also, Nancy's sister-in-law, Deborah Molburg, was the first woman to win the Iditarod. Nancy’s husband, businessman, and highly respected leader, Johnn Molburg brought Nancy and me together. Johnn and I met at a race and began discussing leadership and business, teamwork, and goal setting. As a musher, he participated in events nationally, building award-winning teams with Nancy. An active member of ISDRA he organized races nationally skillfully working with teams in competition and was to become the President of ISDRA. Maintaining communication with teams and groups internationally, Johnn led the organization to a new level of success. The analogy between business and dog sledding goes a long way, from the organization to the development of individual teams. Most important, however, is the individual and their ability to move "on by" obstacles in their path. As a novice musher, I learned to accept risk, discover my trail, and seek work/life harmony. Caring for others as mothers and fathers, caregivers, and volunteers at home while maintaining a challenging career as a team member, manager, or leader requires accepting responsibility for others as well as ourselves. Working with animals, I gained a new sense of what is important, how to build work/life harmony, and how to be inspired as well as inspiring. I hope you find your trail markers and along the way meet mentors as wonderful as mine have been. Guess what??!! It’s above freezing today where I am…for the first time in many days! And…it’s Wednesday! The day I normally spend in Rockford, IL working with my fabulous client Goellner, Inc. They have an early start, so I normally leave my house by 5:30 am. It was a dark, cold drive this morning! When I got to Hennig, (one of the Goellner Inc. companies I serve), Joshua Green said to me, “It’s super cold and slippery driving, so why don’t I drive you over to AME!” (the Goellner Inc company we were working on Goellner Way at today). “I’ll get my car and pick you up at the door. That way you will be warmer and don’t need to worry about slipping!” (It’s too cold for the salt that was everywhere in the parking lot and walkway to work well.) When we arrived at AME, we had to make a short, uphill walk, to another building. Both Josh and Matt Juric (who does Continuous Improvement at AME) offered me their arm! Again, even though everything was salted and cleared as best as possible, they know my knees aren’t what they used to be and wanted me to feel as safe and comfortable as possible! The moral of this story: So often we think about lean implementation as teaching people principles to improve processes. Respect for people, kindness and caring, is often forgotten, or comes a distant second. Not in The Goellner Way! Respect, kindness, caring, safety all come first. Externalize accountability. I haven't gone for a run in awhile. I work out regularly...but running, not so much lately. The longer I go without running, the more resistance I feel around it. So, I used a tried and true method for me to get back into it - externalize accountability (thank you Gretchen Rubin for this game-changing insight!). I joined Brickell Run Club yesterday, a weekly 5K run with 100's of other runners. You show up on time, join a pace group and follow the leader of that group - they handle the logistics & the route, you just put one foot in front of the other. I was struck by how this has parallels in many areas of my life. And, how it relates to the Couples Retreat that we just launched. Externalizing accountability has been one of the biggest life hacks I've used to get the most important things done - I use it for fitness, I used it to write my first book, I use it for learning new skills. I highly recommend trying it. For the most important things (especially hard or new things), I find that externalizing accountability is one of the highest probability routes to success.
