Is this a potential gap in the legal tech market? I was talking to a founder last week about what segments of the legal market they were best placed to target. Big law, SME firms, in-house legal etc. And it got me thinking that there must be some data that can shine a light on where tech companies are focused and more importantly where there might be some opportunities. I looked at some data last week from the LegalTechnology Hub which shows that there are nearly 3000 legal tech solutions on the market. The graph below shows what audience they are targeting. Whilst some companies focus on more than one segment, it's quite a stark comparison. Is there a gap in the market for solutions that are supporting small and medium sized law firms? Every time I share advice on legal tech, lawyers get mad. 🤦♂️ "I never see updates on the latest legal tech trends" "I don't know which tools to adopt" "I don't know where to get reliable information" "My workflow is not that efficient" My advice: Cut down on unnecessary tools. Chances are: You already have enough technology. Chances are: You use a few outdated or redundant ones too! As a result: Your workflow is cluttered with inefficiencies. (Fun fact: You can still stay informed about new tech trends even if you simplify your current stack) So... 1. If you want a more streamlined workflow 2. Your law firm probably has a few 'Sarahs’ too. Many traditionalists may feel intimidated by the complexity of new tools. Despite the convenience they offer, for some, whether due to a lack of tech savviness or negative preconceptions about complexity, digital options may not seem viable. The legal system can be intimidating for many with the repercussions for mistakes being dire. Naturally, the industry is looked at as a cold and rigid one requiring professional help to navigate.
