❓ 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿? 😊 I love to do that and I am really happy that we at #DHL even have a structured process for this which is called “LEADS” and stands for Leadership Evaluation, Achievements, Development and Succession. 🔊 And yes, it is this time of the year where you will hear people in DHL talk about #LEADS. 📅 November always marks an important month as it is self-evaluation time. Employees are asked to reflect on their key achievements, their leadership profile along our DHL Group #LeadershipAttributes, what they want to do next or if they want to remain in their current roles. They can express if they are mobile or would like to continue working in the location where they are based today. 📅 During December and in early January managers then provide their view on the leadership profile along our leadership attributes & an overall assessment. And they also share their perspective with the employee on potential future target roles and development opportunities. 💬 It might sound simple and basic but giving both the employee and the manager time to reflect on these elements and bringing it into a structured process has proven as a perfect foundation for really meaningful dialogues between the managers and the employees and to plan for the future. It also nicely feeds into the succession planning which is a separate phase during the year and which provides managers a great pipeline of candidates once roles become vacant. 👏 So all in all, LEADS aims to develop our people through a great feedback culture as LEADS brings together evaluation of past performance along with recommendations for future development perspectives and succession planning on an annual basis.   🏆 I am super proud to be part of the x-divisional working group who further enhances those processes year-over-year and we are excited that we got shortlisted for a DHL Group ✨HR Award. So keep your fingers crossed for us on Wednesday this week. According to an interview with The Sunday Times, Marks & Spencer CEO Stuart Machin has introduced a new requirement for the 3,800 staff at the retailer’s London head office: in order to pass their annual review, each of them must spend seven days on the shop floor. And yes, that includes him and his fellow C-suite executives too'. Good morning community I have had such a great experience within our P&C team that I would like to share with you some of the good practices that we have developed. In March our #team grew from 2 to 4. Since then, we have intentionally created spaces to know each other, collaborate and build a team that can effectively support our people and the company. Some of the #goodpractices we have implemented are the following: 1.- Huddles: These are quick meetings where we share how we are, and what's new in our lives. It is mostly time to go through topics that are not related to work. It’s been great to build relationships and trust. 2.- Check-in in every P&C meeting: A quick check on how we are and how the days are going. 3.- 1:1 among each other: in my opinion, this has been one of the stronger practices we have implemented. It’s been an opportunity to develop connections, relationships, trust, learn, support each other, and more. The benefits have been incredible. 4.- Celebrate & recognize milestones of the team and personal accomplishments: We care for and celebrate each other. It is great to share the joy and excitement within the team. 5.- Plan and spend time outside work: Yesterday, we went for dinner and after that watched Napoleon Bonaparte in the theatre. It was a great time. These practices and keeping great communication, have been critical to keeping us aligned and ensuring good results and partnering with other departments. It is amazing to have the opportunity to work every day with Giselle Blackman, MBA, CPHR, SHRM-SCP, CHRL linda kovacs and Priscilla Shumba Every team is different but for sure these have helped us to succeed. “Executives need to get their hands dirty”    We enjoyed reading this article about how the M&S HQ team are going ‘back to the floor’, not least as our very own Ella Overshott spent the first seven years of her career at the retailer.    The CEO, Stuart Machin, has made it requirement for all head office staff to spend at least seven days a year on the shop floor, as an essential part of their annual performance review. He sees it as “critically important that [M&S has its] ‘sleeves rolled up’ and close to colleagues who serve customers”.    We absolutely agree. In fact, as part of our culture reviews, we regularly recommend that senior leadership teams spend more time with their customers and front-line staff. It’s the single best way to understand the reality of the customer and employee experiences, and how they might be improved. As well as the great learning it provides, it also helps to build greater visibility and trust in leaders.    How could you go ‘back to the floor’ in some way over the next month? How do you help leaders stay connected to customers/ students/ service users and the colleagues who support them? In our experience 'back to the floor' type activities should be prioritised in any organisation wanting to create an engaging, high-performing organisation. It may be seen as old-fashioned or an awkward experience for people used to the comfort of their office/ home workspace but it's essential to knowing what's really going on in the organisation and the (often small) changes needed to improve performance. With a little structure around the routine and the right mindset (to avoid it becoming a tick-box exercise) it can make an enormous difference. S&L Hospitality has properties in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin and we are committed to staying connected, no matter which location. In the times of "virtual," it can be easy to say "let's jump on a call." We hold weekly 1-on-1's, monthly GM calls, quarterly leadership sessions just to name a few of our virtual meetings. But we also say "let's put something on the calendar for a visit," and these past 4 days were my favorite visit yet! This week was our "GM Summit." The gathering consists of all of our property General Managers coming together under one roof, meeting with our vendor partners, participating in group discussions, sessions covering a variety of topics, good food, a few drinks, and team building activities (Of course we throw in something competitive!) There is a lot of collaboration that goes into putting an event like this together but when you get to sit back and watch it all come together, WOW - is it all worth it! "So nice to put a face to the name... Let's exchange numbers... Call me anytime..." Listening to all the conversations and connections being made, the contiagous laughter, the ideas and thoughts being shared... and on our final day 'this was just what I needed' seemed to be the theme. Bringing everyone together helped not only on a physical level but also emotionally and mentally. To be in a room with so many professional, experienced, and down to earth people was such a great feeling. "Hospitality is all about teamwork, and everyone is always working towards shared goals. This means that everyone is on board to help each other out and you will feel appreciated and valued by each of your colleagues. The main priority in any hospitality job is to satisfy the customer and make their experience perfect" - and I think this team achieved just that! This gathering reminded us of our passion for why we chose this industry, inspired us on how to be a better leader, and how to care for our teams. Next year, we will transition the title from "GM Summit" to a 'Leadership Conference' and would love to see you there! Let's chat about what hospitality means to you and what opportunities we have to offer! [𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍] In the hospitality industry, the common belief is that General Managers should lead from the office, guiding their teams from behind the scenes. But my perspective has always been a bit different. Despite concerns from my manager and teammates that my presence on the front lines might send the wrong message, I believed in leading by example, directly alongside my team. Initially, this approach raised eyebrows. It was unconventional, after all, for a General Manager to be so hands-on. Yet, I was convinced that being out there, in the thick of service, could change perceptions of leadership in hospitality. And over time, it did. My team began to see the value in this approach. They understood that by working closely together, we could significantly enhance the customer journey, leading to improved engagement, satisfaction, and ultimately, revenue. This shift didn't just benefit our guests; it also positively impacted the team's service charge, creating a win-win situation for everyone. Looking back, this experience taught us the importance of occasionally stepping back to observe and understand the impact of our actions, rather than pushing forward without direction.
