The trust in companies for lifelong employment was more of an ideal than the norm in the past. Certainly in the decades of my career I have not experienced a company that has deserved lifelong devotion. I would even say that side hustles, or moonlighting as we used to call it, should be considered the norm, if for no other reason than job security. We have lost something over the generations, because we were not always permanent employees. The recent boom in entrepreneurship is a reversion to a norm over the last 150 years instead of a recent aberration. The day you start a new job is the day you should start preparing (over a predetermined number of months or years) for the next step of your career.

I tried very hard to have a 35 year career at one organization before making a career shift. Unfortunately I was only allowed to last 26.

After spending 33 years with my last employer, I have to say I’m on the fence when it comes to positives on both sides.
