“Think of your news products as if they were your house. If you were inviting thousands of people over to an event, you’d likely spend a lot of prep time ensuring your house was clean and orderly, that it’s easy to navigate once people enter, and that everyone has a pleasant experience. Think of your website or your mobile app or any other news product similarly. Providing a great experience when people visit your products will likely result in them being happier or more engaged, which means they’ll return frequently.” Shannan Bowen breaks down the fundamentals of user experience and design thinking as part of the Beyond Print Toolkit. Whether you're in the process of a print transition or simply looking to refine your website — this resource is a must-read. ✍️ Calls-to-action (CTA) or the call-to-action button directs someone to the desired action on a screen. This can be to increase conversions or to get them to the next step. Over 70% of small businesses do not use call-to-action (CTA) buttons on their websites. Without a CTA, potential leads and customers may struggle to find the correct path to buy a product or sign up for a service or list. 🔴 Why do UX writing buttons matter? Buttons, or calls to action, matter because they clarify what the user should do. Without a call-to-action, a user is stuck on a screen. Calls-to-action are the final piece that glues together user experiences. ✅ Here are our tips for effective UX writing buttons. 1. Start with a verb. Create a conversation together with the headline. Are clear about what happens after someone takes action. 2. Keep UX writing buttons positive When it comes to digital products and mobile apps, it’s important to keep CTAs positive and not instigate guilt. No one should be made to feel guilty, bad, or FOMO for opting out of something. 3. Don't use a string of “Next” or “Continue” buttons The best buttons always let someone know what's on the other side. CTAs like “Continue” and “Next” aren’t ideal for that reason — they lack the added context about what's coming next to the user. 💁🏻♀️ Need help with effective CTA? Search efforts often fail to produce revenue because: You’re not introducing your company and what you do when people arrive on your top of funnel content pages. So what happens is people read your content, then bounce back to their daily life. They never think of you again. The UX of your content pages should do a lot of heavy lifting if you’re using search as a discovery tool. Here’s an example of a design we did for a client with a heavy search discovery strategy. Notice the left-hand side (it’s sticky as you read and scroll). In a nutshell - don’t spend time and effort on content that gets you discovered, if you haven’t optimised your content page UX. Often come across projects where my clients struggle to increase traffic / engagement steadily... I always start with the same foundations: 1. Technical/SEO 2. Content 3. UX/UI 4. Incremental budgeting It can give quite impressive results, in short amounts of time. I don't pretend to do this alone, I've worked with the same team of little geniuses for years (development, media buying, content creation and more...) but overseeing the data behind each move, is just as essential as the operational aspects.
