Embracing the crypto winter Ever since the crypto world shook up with the LUNA crash in May 2022, I've seen a lot of cleaning up in the market. This winter is less about hype and more about building stuff that lasts. There's a new focus on creating solid applications in Digital Assets that are going to stick around for a long time. Speaking of new beginnings, one of the most brilliant person I know has decided to leave a promising corporate career. He's building a company from the ground up, focusing on blockchain-based financial transaction. Another weak signal : Bitcoin is quietly bouncing back to $41,000. 99% of tech companies use the term “platform” wrong. Coinbase is in the 1% that uses it correctly. A tech platform is infrastructure that other companies, products, and services can be built upon. Sorry, but your SaaS, while a great SaaS product with happy customers, is likely not a platform. Examples of tech companies with platforms: • Microsoft: Windows, Azure, etc. • Apple: iOS • OpenAI: ChatGPT • Staffbase (my former employer): white-labeled employee app and intranet But isn’t Coinbase just a crypto exchange? For most of its history, yes, but it’s about to become something much bigger. Coinbase has launched Base, a Layer 2 blockchain built on top of the reliability of Ethereum, which enables smart contracts. Base is built to handle large amounts of transactions at fast speeds and with little to almost no fees. And with that, and their user-friendly programs, companies, products, and services will be built on top of Base. This makes Coinbase a platform company – arguably one of the most important ones soon. I lost ALL of my money on day 1 in crypto. I'm starting to share and post more things that I'm passionate about, but first, I wanted to share how I got here and my journey with web3. It all started back in 2015 when I was in code school... I became friends with some brilliant people, several of whom were bitcoin fanatics. And one day, their conviction inspired me to invest all my money (tbh I was a broke student so it wasn't much) into bitcoin. But later that night, our text group chat exploded with notifications The exchange where our bitcoin was held was hacked. All of our assets were lost. Although I was devastated, I was still obsessed with blockchain technology. This loss led me down a path of self-custody, decentralization, and a desire for a better understanding of blockchains. Since 2015, I spent three years working at @ShapeShift, a crypto exchange. Here, I gained a wealth of knowledge about: - Crypto - Security - Software development - Scaling startups But, I also learned even more about WHY crypto was the future of money and the necessity for it. After ShapeShift, I co-founded @_GamerXYZ alongside my brother, @bobbyblackstock where I've learned about: - What it takes to raise millions of dollars - Building a team - How to get your first 1k users (now 100k) - How to relentlessly iterate on your product I'm excited to share what I've learned here. I'll continue to share my achievements. But, more importantly, I'll also share my failures as I continue to build in this space.

Some Insight into thing's I have learnt whilst working in crypto... 🔽 As a leader at a #web3 company I'm often asked by people who work in tech roles what it's like working in crypto and am I not concerned about job security? For anyone considering a shift into the world of #web3 this might be helpful. Yes, if you work in crypto your company will inevitably be impacted by market movements, but I think if you look back through 2023 you will see that it doesn't matter what tech firm you work at these risks are always lurking. If giants like Alphabet Inc, Meta, Microsoft and Tesla are laying off hundreds/thousands of people, where exactly would you feel "safe" working in tech? I came from a very "safe" industry before moving into #crypto and my personal view if you park comp/equity for a moment on the most rewarding benefits of working at a crypto firm are these.... 💱 I truly believe that we are part of something big that is shaping the future of finance. #Bitcoin has been around since 2009. Crypto is established enough that it's not going anywhere, but early enough that you can still become a really important part of the journey and shaping a web3 company. 🏧 Crypto brands and challenger banks are forcing traditional banks to upgrade their stack and provide better service. This pressure is helping to evolve banking in traditional finance even if the customer does not interact with crypto. Take your banking app for example, I bet it was terrible until companies like Revolut / Monzo came along and forced them to upgrade. 🌍 We are helping to bank the unbanked. According to the Global Findex Database there is still an estimated 1.4billion people that are unable to access the formal financial system. Meanwhile crypto adoption in unbanked regions of the world is rapidly increasing. This is hugely rewarding. 🧠 You will probably get to work with the most intelligent people you have ever met. 💻 You get to use the most cutting-edge tech, work on innovative projects and really push and test your personal abilities. 🎩 You will wear many hats. Crypto firms are start-ups. They hire people who learn fast, adapt to change and can support other teams outside of the role they are typically hired for. This might not be for everyone but if you are hungry to learn, push yourself and enhance your skills this can be one of the most exciting parts of the job and you may find your role evolves over time into something completely new and unexpected. "A New Era" In the simplest of terms, usability is a huge obstacle for the growth of the digital asset space. Until everyday people can store and send crypto to each other with minimal friction...we are a long, long way off real adoption. The frustrating thing for many remains the sluggish speed of any real development. Since 2017, you can't really say there has been much difference in how we store and send crypto...if any. That might be about to change...and people are yet to take notice. Coinbase has always been the most retail friendly platform in this space, so it makes the most sense they are launching their "Smart Wallet". While it is not quite ready for mainstream use, the tech specs certainly seem appealing. The notion of setting up a wallet without the need for long seed phrases is already a huge selling point - by simply using Face ID, Google Chrome profile, fingerprint, or Yubikey. Of course, until it is tested in the real-world, we can't make too many assumptions...but we are hearing all the right noises from Coinbase. Smart Wallet could well be the beginning of real adoption...and I'm all for it.
