The Turkish company OTOKAR Otomotiv ve Savunma Sanayi A.Ş. could grab a RON4.58bn (USD992m) contract to deliver light armoured vehicles to Romania, without any competition, as it was the only one to submit a commercial offer for the tender in time for the 20 March deadline. Otokar is offering its Cobra II vehicles along with a comprehensive package of industrial cooperation and technology transfer. Reports suggested that other companies had initially expressed an interest to compete for the contract but had declined to bid due to offset conditions imposed by Romania. The country has requested local assembly, integration, testing, and MRO services for the vehicles. Meanwhile, Rheinmetall is building a gunpowder factory in Romania in collaboration with the European Commission. Rheinmetall received EUR130m (USD141m) in funding from the EU to expand its production of 155mm artillery ammunition and powder. Safran's Acquisition of Microtecnica Approved by Italy French defense giant Safran's acquisition of Microtecnica, an Italian firm specializing in aerospace components, has been approved by the Italian government. This decision comes after months of uncertainty following Italy's initial block of the sale in November 2023. The Italian government, citing concerns over national security and the Eurofighter jet program, had invoked its "Golden Power" legislation to halt the acquisition. This legislation empowers the government to intervene in foreign acquisitions of strategic Italian companies. Safran, in response to the initial block, engaged in negotiations with the Italian government, ultimately providing assurances to address the concerns raised. While the specifics of these commitments remain undisclosed, Safran emphasized their alignment with the acquisition's objectives and the safeguarding of Italian national interests. The acquisition, valued at $1.8 billion, was part of a larger deal where Safran aimed to acquire Collins Aerospace's flight controls business. This call to action raises a significant point. Lately, the Czech Republic’s decision to acquire F-35s has been on my mind. While the aircraft is commendable, a strategic move that truly bolsters Europe would have been to continue investments in the Gripen. In the current climate of #deglobalisation, it’s essential for Europe to focus on enhancing our own industries and production capabilities. Investing in European assets and manufacturing sectors would be a wiser strategy. Certainly, there may be concerns or even jealousy that countries like Sweden or France might reap greater benefits.
