The Food Authenticity Network (FAN) has published its first annual report – giving a detailed snapshot of food fraud activity across the globe in 2023. Based on official sources only, fruit, vegetables and legumes, milk and dairy products, and beverages were the three commodity groups that generated the most food fraud reports. But honey, herbs and spices, and meat and poultry generated most reports based on an analysis of official, media, and peer-reviewed publications. 💡 We recently hosted a webinar discussing the challenges and best practices in assuring the integrity of herbs and spices. The LGC AXIO PT team braved the summer temperatures to visit our esteemed customers in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. A working group consisting of members from 26 European countries- the Heads of Food Safety Agencies (HoA), has published its first report on food supplements and identified 117 substances that may have potentially hazardous properties and pose a health risk. Among these substances, 13 have been concluded as “highest priority” due to their potential risk to consumers, especially when consumed in amounts exceeding normal intake. These include Coumarin in plant preparations, piperine, tryptophan, Actaea racemosa, Lepidium meyenii and Ocimum tenuiflorum (holy basil). To safeguard the health of consumers, analytical testing of supplement raw materials and finished products is essential. We're thrilled to announce the release of our latest white paper.
