Early in my career, my boss called me into their office, and HR was there when I arrived... They sat me down and told me that they were letting me go, but when I asked why, they couldn't give me a specific reason. It felt awful because I didn't understand what I did that warranted this. I found out later that they believed there was a culture clash between how I operated and interacted with my teams and how the business preferred it. But here's the thing: ➡️ My special method was to actually TALK to my team members, set goals, and hold them accountable not just to me but to each other as a unit. They felt insulted by this and expressed that they really didn't want me actively engaging with them during the work day. ➡️ I regularly called out the mistreatment of junior team members by more senior members to hold them accountable for a healthy working environment. ➡️ I actively pushed to be more data oriented. That is to say, they had zero user data upon my arrival and my direct leader was extremely resistant to the idea. However, six months later , that person pitched it to our VP as their own idea and boom, we had a data team, albeit an unqualified one. It became stunningly obvious from these things that the 'culture' being prescribed by the company was in fact to not have a culture at all. It was my first real lesson in what can happen in an organization when specific values aren't set and agreed upon by every level of the organization. It was also stunningly obvious that this organization had no concept of how to assess existing skill-sets to ensure they had the right people in the right roles. This company has since gone out of business. Recently, a Jobbatical team member dropped a bomb: “If I’m totally honest, I would not recommend Jobbatical to most of my friends.” 😮 This came up at a recent skip-level meeting. The team member, while filling out our people survey, had struggled to respond to the eNPS question that asks how likely you are to recommend your workplace to your friends. She then realized she wouldn’t recommend Jobbatical to most of them. Not because she doesn't believe in what we do, but because she understood the level of commitment we require isn't for everyone. The honesty of this admission, even though surprising at first, was super powerful. Thinking about it, I agree – it’s a legitimate conclusion. Sure, Jobbatical is about skills and expertise, and I think it’s a great place to work (I’m not completely unbiased here). But it's also about a deep passion and dedication to our mission - a commitment not everyone is ready to make. So the fact that she wouldn’t recommend us to just everyone is not a bug, but a feature. ⭐ What I’m proud of is the level of honesty. It's rare for people to feel comfortable sharing such candid feedback, especially in a survey. So I’m happy we’ve managed to maintain this kind of openness in our organization.
