It's all too easy for the academic library to be perceived as some sort of giant edifice - buildings, and resources, and services, but somewhat faceless. Everyone knows human beings work in there but that can be difficult to represent online - most staff (myself included) don't especially want to be on camera, and if you list inidivuals on the website as owners of a service you often only get messages to that individual rather than the team, and so on. So 'the library we' where we constantly say 'we offer this' or 'come and visit us for that' becomes the default, for undertandable reasons - but like Matthew Reidsma says, libraries are people, all the way down. How do we get this message across, that all that we offer is assembled and administered and delivered by actual humans? One of the ways I like to do this is through the narration of our virtual tour at the University of York. Rather than have one person anonymously talk over the top, we use 5 or 6 narrators, whose names and faces and job titles appear on the screen when they start talking, to speak over different parts of the video. I really like this way of introducing users to the staff, without doing talking-heads type videos which I don’t think would hold our students’ attention. I'd really recommend this approach - just the variety of voices is good in itself, but if we can also convey the humanness of the library, even better. Here’s the new Virtual Tour. https://lnkd.in/ebyW5tpb I wrote a little more about it on my website, if you're interested: https://lnkd.in/eetmaau7

🚨🚨🚨 New paper alert 🚨🚨🚨 I'm happy to announce the publication of our paper in the Journal of Open Source Software: EllipticForest: A Direct Solver Library for Elliptic Partial Differential Equations on Adaptive Meshes https://lnkd.in/g8pab5pS EllipticForest solves elliptic PDEs like the Poisson and Helmholtz equations on adaptive meshes using p4est. It implements our novel quadtree-adaptive Hierarchical Poincaré-Steklov method. It is user-expandable and coupling-ready! This paper is an overview of the EllipticForest software library available on GitHub: https://lnkd.in/g6dqSeXq

Introduced by computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra in 1959, Dijkstra's Algorithm stands as a important contribution to the world of computer science. Renowned for its elegance and efficiency, this algorithm tackles the problem of finding the shortest path between two points in a graph. Widely adopted in various applications, from network routing to robotics, Dijkstra's Algorithm remains a fundamental tool in the toolkit of every computer scientist and programmer, exemplifying the power of simplicity in solving complex problems. Our partners are vital in our mission to make social change. For example the University of Oklahoma Libraries has a working group that focuses on metadata justice. Metadata justice refers to the use of accurate and appropriate language in metadata systems like library catalogs. This is important because the words we use to describe people, places and events matter. This is how the OU librarianship pursues progressive change, by focusing on metadata justice, metadata conventions and naming practices. From flashlight signals to optical WLAN: A fascinating journey through my first technical book. I recently finished reading 'Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software' by Charles Petzold. While some parts of the book, like the schemes on the picture, were challenging, the overall experience was incredibly rewarding. This book provided me with a comprehensive understanding of various concepts, including the inner workings of the "Enigma" machine (https://lnkd.in/dwsk5xu8) and the decoding "Bombe " machine (https://lnkd.in/d6u-rSE5). Moreover, now I know that information can be transmitted through electricity, sound, and light. The book is really fascinating and well-structured. The author's clear explanations and accessible writing style make complex topics easily understandable. As the knowledge is too exiting to keep inside - I shared it with all my relatives. :) Highly recommend this book to all who are new to the technical world. It was an eye-opening journey that I'm grateful for.
