I'm excited to announce that the first article I've published about my research into the early history of the three-toed sloth is available in the June 2024 issue of EPOCH History Magazine. The article is titled "The 'Sufficiently Strange' Sloth" and in it I include a summary of my research on the animal's first historic encounter between December 1555 and January 1556. https://lnkd.in/gu2rarHD #historyofscience #animalhistory #renaissancenaturalhistory

Underwater Majesty | Seamounts of the Southeast Pacific - Week 3 - Schmidt Ocean Institute via YouTube: Colossal underwater mountains lie far beneath the surface of the ocean, harboring abundant biodiversity. Using ROV SuBastian as our robotic guide, scientists on the #SEPacificSeamounts expedition are studying these seamounts, some of the most under-explored in the world. Chile is leading the effort to establish one of the first high-seas marine protected areas along the Salas y Gomez Ridge, and the data collected during the expedition will contribute to this critical effort. These oases in the deep Ocean harbor many species that can only be found here. https://lnkd.in/eD7UZ-eg

At Siem Car Carriers we realised years ago that, going forward, our vessels will be trading at less than design power. Amongst several other projects, we asked Houlder Limited to study the already ultra-efficient Siem Curie and Siem Copernicus and check if the bow bulb, post-swirl stator, and other "wet" aspects were optimised for the lower power regimes, and what gains we would get from ultra-high-spec paints. Since then, we've put words (and CFD!) into action: https://lnkd.in/dFjmH6h5
In June 2024, the upgraded Siem Curie left the drydock and re-entered service. We were able film her while in drydock during two of the major eco-friendly exterior upgrades she received. 🌊 Navigating the Seas: the IALA Cardinal Buoy System The cardinal system is a globally recognized navigational tool developed by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). Its cardinal buoys mark safe passages and indicate the direction of deeper water, helping ships avoid hazards and find the safest route. 🧭 Remembering the color and arrangement of stripes helps mariners quickly identify the cardinal direction associated with each buoy. These buoys are often placed to indicate safe passages around dangerous shoals, rocks, wrecks, or other navigational hazards. Each cardinal buoy is uniquely colored and numbered to correspond with one of the four cardinal directions: North, East, South, and West. 🛳️ When approaching a cardinal buoy, mariners use the principle of "Red Right Returning." This means that when returning from the open sea, you should keep the buoy to your right side to navigate safely through the channel. Following this rule helps ships stay in deeper waters and avoid potential dangers. Understanding the IALA Cardinal Buoy System is an essential piece of the Navigational safety puzzle. #IALA #NavigationalAids #Maritime #Navigation #SafePassage #Expertise

The dorsal hoof wall compared to the length of the distal phalanx was thicker in a population of normal draft horses. This is a relevant difference compared to published values in lighter breeds and should be considered when evaluating draft horses for symmetrical distal displacement of P3. Learn more: jav.ma/p3
