Every year for my birthday, I pick a foundation to raise money for all month long. This year I selected a foundation that is near and dear to me. I am raising money for the American Kidney Fund. 37 million Americans have kidney disease. That is 1 in 7 people. Kidney disease is a top 10 leading cause of death in the U.S. and it's an illness with no warning signs and low awareness. Far too many people know nothing about kidney disease — until it's too late. Those who live with this isolating illness can tell you how it touches every area of their lives from both their psychological and physical health, their jobs, and their relationships. AKF is the only organization ensuring that every patient has access to the health care and support they need, at every phase of their disease. When people are concerned about their risk or receive a kidney disease diagnosis, the AKF is one of the first places they turn. They consider it their obligation to provide the best tools and information to help people reduce their risk of getting kidney disease and enable those already with it to live longer and healthier lives. Did you know: 🫘More than 101,000 people on the transplant list a year NEED a kidney and only 17,000 people receive one each year. 🫘The average kidney waitlist for a deceased donor is 3-5 years. 🫘A living donor kidney can function and improve quality of life anywhere between 12-20 years while a deceased kidney can enhance quality of life for 8-12 years. 🫘A living donor kidney can eliminate the need for any dialysis. 🫘A living donor kidney has a quicker recovery time. 🫘A living donor kidney functions immediately after transplant while a deceased donor kidney may take several days to weeks to function normally. You do not have to be biologically related to be a living donor. 🫘People well up and into their 70’s can be living kidney donors. DYK: Only 2-3% of eligible donors donate blood. I recently donated blood and want to share my experience. In short, it was easier than I thought. No issues. No weakness. Would love to know more about others' experiences: Have you ever donated blood? What motivated you to do it? For those who haven't donated yet, what's holding you back? Have you ever received blood or know someone who has? Share their story! We should know how the system works. How we can encourage more people to donate blood regularly? Are there any benefits of blood donation? I’d love to hear your stories on blood donation. Let’s inspire each other!

Giving blood is an incredibly important and life-saving act that most people can do. I will be donating blood today and slightly delayed due to my first tattoo. As someone with O negative blood, I know firsthand how valuable this blood type is to the blood donation service. Although only 8% of the population has this blood type, it's in high demand due to its universal donor status. I often wonder why more people don't donate blood, so I'd like to take a moment to answer some common questions and hopefully encourage others to do the same. Does it hurt? Yes, but not much. The actual needle placement is no worse than a bee or wasp sting, and the finger prick to test your iron level can be more painful. So nothing worse than a paper cut. How long does it take? Normally no more than an hour, and I've been in and out in as little as 30 minutes. Are there any side effects? You're advised not to do heavy lifting, but you're perfectly capable of driving to and from the donation. Donating blood is a personal choice, but I believe it's incredibly worthwhile. April is #DonateLifeMonth. It's an important month for the CF community. When people with CF run out of treatment options, #lungtransplant is their only hope. In addition, due to comorbidities of CF and medication side effects, people with CF can end up needing other organ transplants as well, including kidney, liver, or even heart/lung. Organ donation is the ultimate gift — the most selfless way to pay it forward and ensure that when you no longer need your organs, you can give life (and hope and a future) to someone who otherwise wouldn't get it. There is no greater impact a person can leave behind.
