Youth Service America, with the support of the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, is offering the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation Youth Grants to youth changemakers in the United States, aged five to 25, to lead awareness, direct service, advocacy, and philanthropic projects that focus on ending childhood hunger in their communities. Youth may apply for $250 grants for projects engaging at least 25 other youth as volunteers, or $500 grants for projects engaging at least 50 youth volunteers. Proposed projects must be youth-led and focus on addressing childhood hunger; take place during the Sodexo Servathon (April 1-May 31, 2024), with some activity on Global Youth Service Day (April 26-28, 2024) strongly encouraged; engage youth not typically asked to serve as volunteers; and benefit children and families in the United States. 📉 Major news out of Dallas: one of the city's largest providers of homeless services is closing its doors by the end of 2024. They stretched too far during COVID, and now we’re seeing the consequences. This isn't just a one-off incident – it’s a warning for all nonprofits. The forecasted 7% growth in giving for 2024 is highly optimistic; we’ll be lucky to see 2%. It's time to get real. We can't keep placing unrealistic expectations on fundraisers, especially during a recession. Let's focus on what’s achievable and sustainable in these challenging times. Nonprofits need practical strategies, not pie-in-the-sky goals. If a major player in Dallas can fall, any of us could be next. We need more people thinking deeply about how to care for people in need and dignified ways of doing it. True Charity is one of those organizations that I really resonate with, and the thought leadership they are putting out on the topic is top notch. This is a great article about the downsides of federal funding for nonprofits that touches on the philosophical as well as the practical. People often don't realize that preschoolers can face the same structural and cultural inequities as their parents. Did you know that across the country, Black boys are disenrolled from preschool programs at a rate three times higher than their peers? Or that disenrolled preschoolers are ten times more likely to grow into teenagers who drop out of high school or become incarcerated? It was with these troubling statistics in mind that we applied to the York County Community Foundation to receive their Racial Equity Grant. With these funds we're able to incorporate the evidence-based best practices which work to correct these unacceptable inequities and create a York County where even our youngest citizens can thrive.

The MacArthur Foundation today announced the third installment of its global 100&Change competition. The Foundation is adding a requirement that applicants address how the project will advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. This criterion aligns with the Foundation’s Just Imperative. According to its press release, "[t]he competition is unique because no field or problem area is designated, unlike most prizes and challenges, and proposals from all sectors and anywhere in the world are encouraged. To date, 100&Change has leveraged an additional $511 million in funding, spurring the philanthropic sector to rethink its approach to achieving impact at scale." "In the inaugural round of 100&Change, Sesame Workshop and International Rescue Committee were awarded $100 million to educate young children displaced by conflict and persecution in the Syrian response region. . . . Today, Mayor Rilling and Lamond Daniels the City’s Chief of Community Services announced this year's recipients of the Norwalk Mini-Grant Program. This program is funded by the City's operational budget and administered by the Community Services Department. Thirteen organizations were selected because their efforts significantly benefit our community. This program supports lower-cost projects from each selected nonprofit and helps the City better understand the needs of smaller organizations, build partnerships, and highlight their contributions to our residents. The selected organizations benefit our community through an array of incredible work, including literacy initiatives, such as providing books and literacy training, mental health initiatives through suicide prevention programs, health and nutrition initiatives that enhance farmers' market visibility and assist food-insecure residents, social programs that address loneliness and social isolation, arts access initiatives that expand access for underserved families, drug prevention initiatives that enhance education and awareness to students, youth mentorship initiatives that focus on helping minority youth, technology education initiatives focused on assisting young girls to focus on app development and access free in-person ESL classes. The awarded recipients include: Courage to Speak Foundation East Norwalk Improvement Association Elm Village Faith Lighthouse Restoration Ministry First Congregational Church of Norwalk Horizons at CT State Norwalk Norwalk Early Childhood Collaborative/Norwalk Early Childhood Office Norwalk Symphony Orchestra Recovery Innovations for Pursuing Peer Leadership and Empowerment (RIPPLE) Saturday Academy Share the Hour SOAR Together Trust the Process, Co. This year's program will grant awards ranging between $3,600 to $10,000, with a total distribution of $100,000. Eligible organizations needed an annual operating budget of less than $1,000,000. The City has a very thorough review process that included Fairfield County's Community Foundation, that served as the expert review panel for the application process. The review process involved careful consideration, which included eligibility, conformity with grant guidelines, available funds, the amount needed to achieve the desired results, and program priorities.
