❓ Why February? Unveiling Black History Month's Significance: Black History Month's choice of February is deeply rooted in honoring the profound impact of African Americans on the nation's history. Initiated by Carter G. Woodson in 1926, February was selected for its significance to the Black community, marking a period for reflection and celebration of Black excellence and resilience. Woodson, a Harvard-educated historian, was inspired to promote the study and recognition of African American achievements after witnessing the lack of representation in history. This was a step towards highlighting the indispensable role of Black Americans in shaping the nation. This month, Berkley is celebrating Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their role in U.S. history. Since 1976, every American president has designated February as #BlackHistoryMonth and endorsed a specific theme. The Black History Month 2024 theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of "visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression."
