WOGA Colorado hospitality, energy, and dynamic group of woman was just what the doctor ordered!
We had an authentic, uplifting, and collaborative discussion on career advancement, managing work-life balance, leading effectively, and handling conflict resolution. The answers were simple: surround yourself with the people you aspire to emulate as mentors and understand that success and grit doesn’t shine through a resume; it’s all about action, discipline, networking, and knowing your content better than anyone else.

Just got the goosebumps all over again. Thank you Lilac GuzmanKristen DrewTien Do Danielle Cook and WOGA Colorado. I've never had so much fun prepping or participating in a presentation.
I spent several years in Investor Relations. From that tenure, I learned that "momentum" is enticing. Job seekers, entrepreneurs, and investors look for industries, sectors, and product categories that seem poised for unstoppable growth. Similarly, at any given point in time, there are certain industries, places, people, and companies that can generate career momentum. The amazing thing about momentum is that it can make up for many other weaknesses. Yet momentum can be very enticing when you are considering a career. Unless you view your position as merely a way to pay the bills, I counter - longer-term career contentment is aligned with core values.
Nowadays, I mentor younger professionals. They are frequently baffled by how one "finds" a career that resonates. I believe this affliction stems from choosing school subjects and university degrees without knowing the industry. Then, this path is viewed as a box. This can lead to unhappiness in a career and, as time goes on, a feeling of being stuck. It's important to intern and test the industry.
In all honesty, I ended up in the #naturagas industry by accident. But as soon as I was here, I knew, "These are my people." They are hardworking, fun, innovative, collaborative, and there was a tremendous opportunity to learn and grow. For me, the passion came with mastery and time. Later in my career, the fact that we serve the greater good of our country by providing reliable energy and a quality of living that is the envy of many around the world became an important component in my contentment. The impact that natural gas has on America’s communities and the nation as a whole to boost financial and economic strength as well as provide power to other industries that help America thrive can't be ignored. The icing on the cake is the people.
So, my advice to those who are not content in their current industry or are just entering the #workforce is to pick an industry, not a job. Then, once you get to know the industry, pick a company. From there, pick whatever job inside that company is available and roughly in line with your skills and aspirations.
I'll close with two examples of the importance of people and companies. My son just started at Atmos Energy. Atmos is known for its #culture. He is living that real-time. He works hard and returns to his home each night with a sense of purpose and dignity. Fieldwork is good for him, and he's thrilled to be on a great career path. I am so proud of the young man he is growing to be and excited that he will benefit from this industry.
My second example of "great people and company" is TECO Energy. When #Ian hit Florida, TECO's service to their employees equaled their service to the community. The video below is a great example of the benefit of picking an industry and company that values its people.

An ocean with one foot of depth!
As the saying goes, a rolling stone gathers no moss. A quote that I can't disagree with more. In the age of connections, winner is the one who gathers as much practical knowledge as possible. Practical knowledge is what can be obtained by a rolling stone! A combination of experience and skill which at first glance might not look so applicable, but we all have been in situations where we got use of some completely random knowledge there was no reason to know about. That being said, this one foot deep ocean of knowledge will of course not come in handy unless you've got the advanced knowledge in your own career.
