When you get to work with your own daughter... Sure, I've seen my daughter Chase Carpenter in action. I've seen how her smile and positive energy can draw people in. I've watched her rally groups of young women, whether it's for pure fun and community development, or it's for a purpose-driven event, meant to move the needle. She's an organized, efficient, and magnetic leader. So you may imagine my pride getting to work alongside her this past summer at The Lola. The Lola is a vibrant, women's community space where I've been co-working for the past year and a half. I've also contributed some work to The LOLA team, helping Dana Xavier Dojnik with project management processes and content marketing; starting and co-leading a weekly accountability group with Melissa Uppelschoten, now led by superstar Qiana Avery, SHRM-CP; and co-facilitating the monthly, in-person Founders & Freelancers group with the incomparable energy-shifter Kafi London. In short, being part of The LOLA community has been my jam. When The LOLA accepted Chase as an intern last spring, I knew she'd fit right in. She understood the assignment: to help support the powerful network of inclusive, female entrepreneurs and women in business who want to build a life and career in which we are constantly growing, thriving and succeeding. It's exciting to see young women realize and embrace their own power. It makes me wish I knew what they already know when I was in my 20s! But it was a different time and we were ALL different people. :) I'm excited to keep my focus on what's ahead for all of us. Because women - young, mid-life and wise - will change the world. Reflecting on February... February was an absolute whirlwind! 🌪️ Who knew so much could happen with adding one extra day in the month this year? 🤣 Both personally and professionally, it was a month of growth, challenges, and unexpected turns. Here's a glimpse into the some of the things that made it such a wild ride: 💸 Backing Out From a 6-Figure Project: Sometimes, the toughest decisions lead to the most valuable lessons. After some deep-dive research, I made the call to turn down my first 6-figure project. 👉👉 The tip here: always invest time in thorough research before diving into any project. It's not just about the money; it's about the right fit and long-term success. 💡 🤝 Internship Journey Begins: Exciting times as Anna has kick-started the process of hiring a marketing intern from Iowa State University! We're already through several interviews, and these students are incredible! We're looking forward to welcoming fresh perspectives into the team. We also get to speak at an Iowa State University - Ivy College of Business class at the end of March! 😭 Facing the Unexpected: February brought a mix of emotions, with the unexpected passing of one of Social Nickel's contractors. Initially, I lost contact for a brief period, assuming he was on vacation, and forgot to inform me. As events unfolded, I discovered the sad truth. Each experience last month has reinforced the importance of adaptability, resilience, and the need to value every relationship – be it personal or professional. Meet Murphy Alum, Quinnyata Bellows from the North Shore Country Day School Class of 2015. During her time at DMSF, Quinnyata participated in Affinity Groups and held a Walgreens Corporate Internship. Today, she works as a freelance producer and costume manager. Let’s hear what advice she has to share! 💙What was DMSF’s impact on you? 💛I learned that staying connected with my community and creating connections that last a life time can benefit me more than any fleeting moments. The people I have met through Daniel Murphy have influenced me in a number of ways. So many doors have opened for me that I never thought I would have access to because of volunteers and staff that have reached out to me during and after my scholarship program. It would be an understatement to say that I have gained a number of mentors that have paved a way for someone like me to flourish in the arts and make a career out of something that was just my passion and curiosity at the time. 💙Why was receiving a good education so important to you? 💛The older I get the more impactful my education history has been for me. With every decision I make, the skills and ability to navigate through society were just basic lessons taught to me through programming and courses dedicated to ensuring my success in the past. I may not have fully understood the weight of an amazing education in my teenage years but seeing how things could have been more troubling for me now makes me all the more grateful for the opportunities I had. This ever changing appreciation for my education is what makes it so important. 💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? 💛Take advantage of everything. This seems like a simple task but I think at a young age it’s easy to look past the small details but every thing that comes your way is a potential door that can opened and explored. Whether that is introducing yourself to someone new or being the first to volunteer, there is absolutely nothing unavailable to you unless you believe it. My internship with Indiana Restaurant & Lodging Association has come to an end. Now, you might be wondering, “Why share this?" Allow me to explain. It's not uncommon for interns to feel marginalized, a sentiment sadly familiar to me. Feeling undervalued, you slowly start to dismiss your ideas and lose motivation to contribute. You feel as if you’re not someone whose ideas matter or someone who can bring forth value. Perhaps it's due to your position, race, or gender. But without speaking out, your insightful perspectives go unnoticed, leading to missed opportunities for advancement and growth, the whole point of the internship. It's a perpetual cycle. In addition, studies show that 45% of female business leaders find it challenging for women to speak up in the workplace or assert themselves. As a woman of color, this statistic is even more disheartening. Recognizing this issue in workplaces, I wanted to share and emphasize the importance of embracing your voice and acknowledging your value! Regardless of your position, ethnicity, or gender, you matter! I am all for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and that is something that I will always fight for. To my fellow interns who resonate with this struggle (or anyone else navigating similar experiences), know this: there's a company out there that values and supports your success. Stay resilient but never stay stagnant! I am always open to listen to those who share these challenges, anyone is always more than welcome to reach out.

Selecting the next President of my college is no easy feat, and I've learned invaluable lessons while reading through each application. If you are currently applying for a certain position, internship, job opportunity, etc, then this may be helpful for you. As we wrapped up our last committee meeting, here are my key takeaways: 1) Clarity in Communication: When crafting your ROI or cover letter, clarity is paramount. Clearly articulate your mission and vision, demonstrating how your values align with the organization's goals. For instance, if you're forward-looking or ambitious, provide concrete examples illustrating these qualities. Remember, actions speak louder than words – show, don't just tell. 2) Back Your Claims: It's not enough to simply state your dedication to certain principles like student equity and success. Back up your claims with tangible examples or past projects that demonstrate your commitment. This builds credibility and trust with your application readers. 3) Engage Your Audience: Share your experiences! Whether it's a personal anecdote or a success story, engaging your audience with relatable content makes your message more impactful. In closing, I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity to represent Arcadia, CA as the youngest board member. Huge thanks to the committee for their dedication to our community college. Throughout this fall semester, I accomplished many goals. I learned and created impact by continuing to be a Bonner Intern, expanding the One Love Foundation on campus, and working on my Bonner Capstone. Starting as a Bonner Intern, I took charge of Bonner's Summer of Service and led the first-year class as they transitioned from high school. I created new relationships with the first-year and developed a workshop that led Bonners to search for their summer internships. Taking leadership, facilitating meetings, and being a resource for the program expanded my knowledge in administration and management. While these are only a few things I partook in, these two roles were the most significant as a Senior Intern. I successfully led a workshop with the One Love Foundation, demonstrating the signs of unhealthy relationships. With my team, we decided to show Road Trip, a short film presenting the idea of masculinity and how it can impact a relationship. Several students learned at least one new thing from the event by providing resource cards, bracelets, and worksheets. I plan to continue hosting workshops in the spring as it makes a difference within the Allegheny community. Moving along to my Bonner Capstone, similar to the One Love Foundation, I can advocate for unhealthy relationships on campus. By providing the resources on campus and improving the relationship with Meadville's Women's Services, more students will have the knowledge and resources if ever in need. Partnering up with another Bonner makes this process more accessible as we advocate for change and improvement so students can access those resources. The timeline may have been the most challenging, but much has been completed, making it more reassuring. These are small accomplishments I made throughout this Fall Semester. In the spring, I have new goals to improve and expand in all three areas. I can't wait to see what's to come! Thank you to all who helped me achieve my goals along the way. 

Meet Wren Heron ‘24! Wren studied Communications and Media and minored in English and Asian Studies. We asked Wren about future plans and favorite parts at Naz: 1. What was your best experience at Naz? If I were to rank my best experiences, the top ones would be the time I’ve spent with the friends who I’ve made on campus. Nothing compares to the affinity we found with each other and the way we all supported each other in growing and learning about ourselves. 2. Who was your favorite professor? Dr. Phillip B. Guingona has had a tremendous impact on me as both a student and a person. His classes allowed me to pursue academic interests that I hadn’t previously had the opportunity to explore, meet my closest friends, and start learning more about myself. As a professor, Phillip truly values the lens that I bring to the classroom as an interdisciplinary student, and he has wholeheartedly supported my research and academic endeavors, even when I haven’t been confident in them myself. 3. What’s next? Summer internship at LáLew Public Relations- a woman and minority-owned public relations firm that champions diversity, equity, and inclusion in client work. After the summer, I hope to pursue a career path that allows me to engage in DEI work and push for more inclusive and accessible language.
