Food choices have long led to debates not only about personal health, but also animal welfare, cultural expectations and the role of government regulations in shaping people’s diets. The damage that animal agriculture is doing to fragile aquifers, while less documented, is particularly important: The decline of the aquifers could affect what Americans eat, and potentially become a threat to America’s food supply. https://lnkd.in/eaAVrFFf

A new survey on US and British dietary choices has just been released from YouGov: 67% Brits describe themselves as 'meat eaters' & just 6% avoid dairy. However, animal welfare drives choices for three-quarters of us, and the environment, more than half. This really shows that engagement on societal issues is going to be really important for the future of meat & dairy. https://lnkd.in/eDH4K9M9

The welfare aspects in this article are highly valuable for anyone living or working in rural communities where equids are fundamental to the livelihood of the people. I've seen numerous cases in South Africa, for example, where the donkeys and horses live in better conditions than the families that own them simply due to how important they are to the family’s survival. In Serbia, working equids are still very much a part of daily life in some communities, influenced by both tradition and economic factors. In majority of cases, ignorance or lack of education is the main reason for compromised welfare, as well as lack of resources or access to resources, particularly veterinary and dietary. It's hugely important therefore that the public in general is made aware of what 'good' welfare conditions look like so that they may offer help in situations where this is lacking. Local animal authorities and organizations should also support these communities as much as possible through the provision of education and educational materials, and affordable or free veterinary care where possible. Some other mind-blowing stats in this article... 'working equids could generate 30% of the minimum daily wage', 'only available mode of transport for children to get to school'... it's therefore shocking to read about how significantly donkey populations have been reduced due to the demand for beauty products derived from donkey skin, among others. That is heartbreaking that a family's livelihood will suffer, that children won't be able to go to school, because people want to slaughter donkeys for beauty. These organizations are fighting an uphill battle so if you're able to, get involved and drive awareness.

Sustainability is of course essential for the industry to focus on for many reasons. But this (and other sources like it!) reinforces the fact that animal welfare is still the top concern of the public.
