I was chatting with a former boss yesterday. He had quit our workplace to head a start-up. The start-up was a distributor of medical equipment. They had started a new line and decided to test sales through a business blog. They employed a freelance writer to blog for them. The blog gave them 17X ROI! The numbers did not take me aback. As a blogger, I know the power of blogging. For a small business, it could be the #1 selling tool. I mean face it. Renting ad space is expensive. Plus, advertising looks "salesy". As a yet-to-be-known name, not many people will buy from you if you sound pushy and desperate to make a sale. Blogging is different. It educates customers. It speaks to them. In fact, the top quality of a well-written business blog is empathy. Empathy makes your readers feel you are one of them. When you blog, no matter what line of business you are in, make your readers feel rather than think. The emotional mind makes the final buying decision. I evaluate 100s of writers and marketers each month, and I’ve come to realize I can put you into one of three buckets: you are either a 🐑SHEEP, a 🦈 SHARK, or a 🥾SHERPA. Good clients only want to hire one of those. 🐑SHEEP are soft and quiet. They do what they’re told and they won’t complain about it to your face. (At least in a business context. We all know sheep in real life are awful). A 🦈 SHARK does whatever it takes to win and deliver results. They’ll get you there, but you might not feel good about what you do along the way. A 🥾SHERPA is knowledgeable but humble. They care about the journey, the view from the summit, AND the trip home. Why do I say good clients only want to hire one of those? Because the clients who seek out 🐑 usually intend to work you hard and pay you little, and I don’t want you to go through that. The clients that seek out 🦈 don’t care how or why you do what you do as long as you get results, and I think your how and why is one of the most important things about you. Clients who seek out 🥾, though? They’re in it for the long haul. They want their business success to translate into personal and financial for both of you, and doing good work often turns into friendship. (Interestingly enough, the progression I see in freelance writers tends to be: start out as a 🐑, train yourself to be a 🦈, and then rediscover your humanity and become a 🥾. Maybe it’s less of a choice, and more of a path we’re all on??)

I blame Ted Lasso... A really discouraged freelance writer cornered me the other day.   She's had zero success and the only person who came close to hiring her ended up being a scammer who wanted access to her bank account.   Oof.   She asked me lots of questions about: ➡️Where I find clients ➡️How I find work ➡️What I say on sales calls to get hired But she didn't like any of my answers…   So I said what I was thinking.     “It sounds like maybe you just don't believe in yourself.”    You have to deep-down believe in yourself.    You have to believe that if you show up and do the work you WILL reach your goals.   You have to believe in yourself so firmly that even the mean-girl from high school, an old boss, or some LinkedIn troll won't keep you from showing up.   No copywriting tip I share is going to magically turn it around if you don't believe it's possible for you.   She responded.  “I just haven't had my big breakthrough yet…”   And that's when I went full-Ted-Lasso on her.    “Your big breakthrough is believing in yourself. THAT will open all the doors.”   I've worked with entrepreneurs and small biz owners this week and whether they made $150k (one launch closed Tuesday at over 6 figs!) or less than $100 (had one of those too) the thing that makes me SO FREAKING PROUD is their unwavering belief.   It is beyond inspiring to me when you believe so deeply that you're going to win. No matter what.    If Ted Lasso were your business coach he would give you an inspiring pep talk and probably make you dance.   That's it today. Just believe.  ---------- Hi, Camille Pardo, Copywriter here 📝 I write personality-packed copy And rescue boring, lame and unopened emails 🙈 Want better emails? Starting a service business like ghostwriting is not sexy (esp if you've already sold a company)... Why? • They're a lot of work. • They're relatively hard to scale • They require you to *gasp* do sales again... But you're leaving $100k – $1M on the table if you don't offer a high-ticket service as a creator-consultant. Here's 3 ways to overcome these excuses (from my own experience): --- Excuse 1️⃣ "I don't know how to sell myself." ↳ What you're really saying: − "A $3,000+ project is too hard to sell." − "My skills aren't worth that much." ↳ Fix: Just share two things: your PRESENT process and your PAST process. Share yourself > Sell yourself. --- Excuse 2️⃣: "It doesn't scale." ↳ What you're really saying: A hands-on service isn't scalable so you would rather focus on creating digital products that sell themselves. ↳ Fix: Paul Graham said it best: "Do things that don't scale" (at first). AFTER you've succeeded in selling your 1:1 or 1:few service THEN turn that into a product to sell 1:many. --- Excuse 3️⃣: "I'm terrible at sales" / "I don't want to be a scummy marketer" ↳ What you're really saying: "I'm bad at sales and I'm not willing to learn it" ↳ Fix: You might be tired of corporate sales. But the great part about post-exit life? There are no sales quotas to meet. Just you helping others solve problems you've already gone through (and then getting paid for it). Learn (soft) sales. It's a fun skill. --- These days whenever I tell people I'm a ghostwriter, I get one of two reactions: "𝗢𝗵, 𝘀𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗲!" or "𝗦𝗼... 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿." This still makes me cringe... And stopped me from starting my agency for YEARS. But by systematically dismantling these limiting beliefs, I've been able to find joy, and look past the cutthroat speed and anxiety of my 10-year tech/marketing career into my Next Thing: building my ghostwriting agency.
