How do Executive Assistants become Chief of Staff? 👇 As I've been engaging more and more with the EA and CoS community - I've seen various journeys: EA to Senior EA EA to Operations HR to EA Operations to CoS But the one that strikes me the most is the journey of EA to CoS - not uncommon to see here on LinkedIn. I've become curious about the journey as there are particular themes I've seen that lead to the transition. Here's a hypothetical journey of Jane from EA to CoS - does this sound familiar? Background: Jane Smith began as an Executive Assistant (EA) at Tech Innovations, a mid-sized software company. Known for her diligence and keen interest in business operations, Jane quickly became indispensable in her role. Stage 1: Broadening knowledge and skills Jane excelled in managing logistical tasks and began attending product demos and training sessions to understand the company’s core operations. She volunteered to manage a project improving internal communication tools, showcasing her project management skills. Stage 2: Leadership and strategic engagement Jane’s responsibilities expanded as she led significant projects like the annual strategic retreat and a major software upgrade. These roles highlighted her ability to navigate complex cross-departmental interactions and enhanced her visibility within the company. Stage 3: Advancing education and formalizing expertise To further her strategic understanding, Jane pursued a part-time MBA with a concentration in Strategic Management. This equipped her with deeper business insights and strengthened her leadership capabilities. Stage 4: Stepping into a strategic role With a solid track record and a new MBA, Jane was prepared when the Chief of Staff position opened up. What this basically means is while I held different roles as an Operation manager or a Personnel manager I also had the privilege of to being an Executive Assistant to my CEO. As an Executive Assistant, I thrived on the dynamic nature of supporting top-level executives, ensuring smooth operations, and driving efficiency across the board. What we learned: from filling a 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 A chief of staff is the operational swiss-army knife of any organisation. It's a tricky role to hire because they have SO many responsibilities. When I filled a CoS role last year for a Synthetic DNA company, here are 3 things I learned: 💼 Where the option is there to be sector-agnostic, management consulting firms with dedicated life science divisions are a rich pool of qualified talent. 💼 Matching based on skills, rather than job titles, meant that lead Strategic Project Managers were great potential fits for the role. 💼 The soft skill that all our strongest prospects displayed in abundance, was proven examples of world class time management. Executive assistants have the gift of seeing their company from the top. And the Chief of Staff role is not the only or even "the most natural" next step for EAs who are looking to transition roles. Instead, the Chief of Staff role is one of *MANY* natural next steps for an EA. Project management, HR, and operations also make a lot of sense. If you are an EA looking to transition roles: - Start observing the functions in your company and which you’re drawn to. - Set up some coffee dates (in person or virtually) to get to know and ask questions of people in roles you’re interested in. - If you have the bandwidth, take on small projects within different functions that you may be interested in. - Share your goals with your leader and ask for their support and an ideal shared timeline for the transition. These are just a few things to start with. But what's the most important thing? JUST START. As an EA, use your role to your advantage!
