Hi LinkedIn community, Ready to share my latest creation with you!—an OLX Clone! 🛒 After gaining a deep understanding of React hooks and components through my Netflix clone project, I decided to try something new. Here's how my OLX project differs: TypeScript: I used TypeScript instead of JSX to enhance type safety and code quality. React Hooks: Leveraged hooks such as useState, useEffect, and useContext for efficient state management. Firebase: Used Firebase for user authentication and database management. API Integration: Integrated APIs to fetch and display images. Additional Features: Enabled a search functionality and added the capability for users to sell products. This project helped me solidify my understanding of TypeScript in a React environment and explore new functionalities. My first ever PR is for Meta 's #llma2 repo! I discovered a typo in the #llama2 repo, the only time I saw something on GitHub, and understood it. So I dug in, scratched my head for hours, added a character, and removed two... and ta-da, my #firstcommit was done! That too for Meta?? I was elated about my debut in #llama 2's code, completely unaware that I needed to create a PR. 😭 So the red and green highlights stayed only in my forked repo, idle for days! I finally created the PR today, and am still learning the ABCD of Open Source. My eyes sparkled when I first saw the typo. I thought, "How can someone at Facebook overlook it? Now, am I going to fix this?" Anshika fixing codebase of a #llm?? I was on cloud 9. Gradually, I got the Sense and Essence of Open Source: people, no matter the background, being able to collaborate and contribute. Oh, how I love this community! Today at Meta we open sourced DotSlash, which is something I came up with in early 2019 because I wanted a better way to distribute cross-platform command line tools with minimal overhead. As of 2024, DotSlash is executed *hundreds of millions of times per day* at Meta, so I was extremely excited to polish it up and share it externally! As someone who picked up "systems programming" what felt like late in my career, one thing I constantly remind myself is that DotSlash is not something I personally could have written 10 years ago. When I was starting out, Java and JavaScript were my go-to languages, but DotSlash only "works" because it is written in a *systems* programming language (Rust). A great real world example for a build and launch! How Meta built and deployed its Threads app, which scaled to a 100m users in 5 days. My fav bits from the article: - they had a "small" engineering team of 60 engineers. - most engineers were senior and completely isolated from rest of Instagram and Meta to reduce noise. - The app was built in 5 months (start to release). - They shared Instagram's Python Django backend. Apps were new and largely native. - They even monitor "scroll performance" to look for frame drops on client side. - They didn't write any UI automated tests, since UI was changing very quickly. Some views got 3+ redesigns over the 5 months. Backend TDD was followed. - They had to scale their capacity and support the launch, on the fly (due to earlier launch). Limited load testing was completed before the launch. - The team feels keeping the focus high and a limited scope was the key to a successful quick launch for this app. https://lnkd.in/duHSZVCp

Taro is used by ~70,000 engineers for career growth and our backend costs $650/month to run. We use Firebase where our costs are dominated by Firestore, a document-based database. Within Firestore, the costs are dominated by database reads, about 60 million per month!! 😳 Unfortunately, there's no easy way for us to segment where the reads are coming from. We're probably querying too many documents on some surface of the app, but I'm not sure where... Programming is a more extreme example of the classic marketing quote: "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half." I'm sharing to invite feedback and transparency. This is the kind of info I was always curious about when I was working at Meta, where money was infinite and I never thought about compute costs. I don't have a good sense of whether our use of Firebase is inefficient. Is the data above surprising to you? Our server costs are not too worrisome now, but a quick change that could save hundreds of dollars a month would be time well spent.
