Capgemini Americas Portfolio Lead

So proud of my daughter Becky Barsky for the great work she did this summer researching Halibut and snow crabs. She was in the North Pacific off Kodiak Island studying Halibut and just wrapped up a research project on snow crabs in the Bering Sea near the international dateline. Flying in and out of Dutch Harbor we felt like she was off to an episode of the “Deadliest Catch” but we were thrilled to learn she had connectivity while onboard the ship for 2 weeks so got to communicate regularly. What an adventure!

Biological Science Technician at the USGS Western Fisheries Research Center

Friday marked my last day as an intern at the International Pacific Halibut Commission! These past 12 weeks have allowed me to greatly build up my fisheries knowledge, understand the intricacies behind stock assessment and management, and have some unforgettable experiences. Some projects I participated in this summer include working in the lab to determine the sex of 10,000+ commercially landed Pacific halibut samples, taking photos of halibut otoliths for AI aging, port sampling with the Makah tribe, and of course participating in the Fishery-Independent Setline Survey out of Kodiak, AK. I also had a long-term intern project focused on investigating how Pacific halibut tail patterns may relate to one another in regards to factors such as region, sex, and length. Overall, I am so grateful for my experience this summer and for all the skills I am walking away from IPHC with. This summer, I also had the unique opportunity to work as a field biologist with the BERING SEA FISHERIES RESEARCH FOUNDATION on their Opilio Pilot Project. The project consisted of spending 2 weeks in the Bering sea doing side-by-side tows with NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to collect biological data on snow crab. This project was my first time focusing on shellfish, and was a great opportunity to participate in some crucial research right now. I am so grateful to my science party from the BSFRF as well as the Vesteraalen crew!
