Keeping our skies safe with the help of supercomputers 🚀 Researchers at Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU)’s School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI) are utilising high-performance computing to identify hazardous airspace through urban weather simulations. The research delves into the oft-neglected impact of building wake on airspace usability, addressing challenges like crosswind and turbulence tolerance. 🌬️ 👨🔬 John Wang, Assistant Program Director at NTU’s School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, ATMRI, shared how the team tapped into NSCC’s resources to expand their research capabilities. Part 5 – University of Pisa   🎯 The University of Pisa is one of the oldest European Universities with a long-standing tradition in #aeronautics and #space. 🌍 The Aerospace Division of the Department of Industrial and Civil Engineering and the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry (DCCI) are directly involved in this project. DICI and DCCI have collaborated for more than five years at the development of an iodine propellant management system for electric propulsion applications, through the a past ESA Action. 💡 As part of the goals in this project, DCCI and DICI will develop an iodine mass flow meter based on laser spectrophotometric techniques to perform instantaneous measurements of the iodine mass flow rate during the thruster operation. The process for measuring the mass flow rate is completely non-invasive and easily scalable, so it can be readily used to assess the mass flow rate of corrosive substances like iodine in a harsh environment, such as the one present within the test chamber of EP systems. 📬 Stay tuned for more information and to meet the entire consortium! The Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. (German Aerospace Center) consists of more than 50 institutes and facilities at 30 locations across #Germany, each of which is highly specialised in its field. A few weeks ago we had an exciting exchange and mutual visits with one of these institutes that is particularly close to us: the Institute of Materials Physics in Space. 🚀🔬   Like us, our colleagues are researching different aspects of materials, their behavior and properties. The difference lies in the location: We investigate under terrestrial conditions, while our colleagues are specialised in space and micro-gravity conditions. 🌟 Exciting Opportunity We are still looking for a great PhD candidate for the topic T6 "Robust Motion Trajectories" in our research training group AirMetro, starting in May 2024. Sensor precision, fusion of multiple data sources and absence data due to difficult environmental conditions or technical defects require the modelling of vehicle states beyond deterministic models. The objective of this PhD thesis is to develop and apply appropriate polymorphic uncertainty models in order to continuously determine robust motion trajectories. The project aims to overcome drawbacks of probabilistic models by means of problem adapted data modelling and the application to realistic data scenarios. RTG AirMetro is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

From the surface of Venus, the permanently shadowed craters on the moon, the moons of the outer planets, and beyond, unique solutions will be needed to generate, store, transmit, and manage and control power. Pending post that I wanted to share with you all. Proud recipient of Cable and Wireless Award during my masters studies at University of Surrey thanks to Chevening Awards scholarship by FCDO, UK. The scholarship opens this August 7 and there would be an opportunity to grab this fully funded opportunity for your studies abroad dream. Through this post I will also try to answer an important question: How did I manage to grab the award in SATCOM despite coming from an aerospace engineering background? As soon as I entered the college, I knew I had to focus on SATCOM and Space Avionics modules more intensely than others. I refreshed my basics using following: 1. Visited back class 12th physics book to refresh frequency, modulation and demodulation techniques. 2. The UK Profs accent posed understanding difficulties so additionally I took NPTEL Lectures by Prof. Kalyankumar Bandyopadhyay 3. Watched YouTube videos on fundamentals of Satellite Communication 4. Undertook SATCOM projects: a) Link budget design of a Ka-band satellite (UltraSat) b) Modem Performance Evaluation 5. Undertook Space Avionics Projects a) Power System Design of a Low Cost Lunar Satellite Plateform for Water Imaging at Poles b) Investigation of the European space agency LEON3 processor tool chain and simulator as a precursor for when flight hardware becomes available All of these projects were challenging and demanded a lot to be put in within just a short span of 9 months. When I look back I am glad I was able to excel in all of them. But the one project which I liked a lot was ‘Link budget design’. The details of salient projects I have pinned in the first few comments. Feel free to go through them. I would highly recommend this course at University of Surrey as I have lived through the journey and the profs and labs are high class, I can vouch for it. During the past six months, I've been dedicating to a research in transport systems field titled "Proposition and analysis of eVTOL flight networks in the state of Santa Catarina" a problem that my advisor Humberto Bettini and I developed seeking to understand the potential of eVTOLs in Brazil. The project intends to explore flight networks for eVTOLs using graph theory methods (hub-and-spoke) and made me stare and study themes like vertiports proposition, advanced air traffic management and others constraints/challenges faced by the eVTOL industry. The image refers to a preliminary network which will be examined through sensitivity analysis in the next months of research. The goal is to determine which routes are viable and which network lead to the optimization of specified objective functions such as lower cost, shorter time, etc. It has been a big challenge - yet a true pleasure - to develop this research applying such an innovative technology in the place where I was born and raised.
