The staff of UCP attended an in-service given by our Rehab Supervisor, Steven M. Asofsky, MA, CCC-SLP/TSHH. This in-service highlighted choking and aspiration precautions to ensure the individuals are safe during mealtimes. Education on anatomy and physiology of the swallow mechanism was discussed as was current terminology and protocols for assessment, including a live FEES procedure. The attendees were further provided with a reference guide to assist with carryover of solid and liquid consistencies and mealtime preparation. As a result, the organization will be implementing this topic into their future ongoing educational staff training. Thank you Steven & the UCP team for your participation in this in-service!

With our collaboration with the County of San Diego and dozens of community organizations, the Revive & Survive San Diego initiative has surpassed 100,000 people trained in hands-only CPR. This effort to train 1 million San Diegans could result in a 41% increase in the number of people who experience cardiac arrest and receive bystander CPR, resulting in a significant increase in their chances of survival. "We found that if we have this community-based training program and we look over five years, the model predicts that this community training could lead to over 1,700 more bystander CPR events administered to people who have cardiac arrest outside hospitals, and that increase could save the lives of 474 people." — Natasha Martin, DPhil, UC San Diego School of Medicine professor told The San Diego Union-Tribune Revive & Survive San Diego is a community effort with dozens of organizations training people across the county in hands-only CPR. "We really want to mobilize all bystander CPR training activities within the county such that their doors are being knocked on every single day by residents who want to be trained." — Cheryl A.M. Anderson, PhD, MPH, dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego Join the movement as a partner or get CPR trained by visiting revivesurvive.ucsd.edu. #CPRSavesLives #PublicHealth #CPR

A student asked us if she could do CPR with the mannikin on the table during a training session. She had a bad back. She couldn't bend down to the ground. We've had many requests for modifications like this during CPR training. 'Can I put the mannikin on a chair?' 'Can I place the mannikin on a table?' And the answer is no. We can't legally give you CPR certification with these modifications. It may sound unfair, but the reason for this becomes abundantly clear when cases like this come up. In a real-life situation, you can't perform CPR on a person in a chair. In a real-life situation, getting an unconscious person onto a table is not practical. If your Registered Training Organisation is allowing you to make these modifications, it is NOT legal, it is NOT safe, and it is NOT preparing you for a real-life emergency in your workplace. https://lnkd.in/eMUZH_jg
