Here at DF Concerts, it’s been a busy year in sustainability since the last #EarthDay. As one of the core values of our business, we want to celebrate our top environmental achievements of the past 12 months: - Sent zero waste to landfill for the 3rd year in a row.   - Arranged energy audits at our office and our venue, King Tut’s.  - King Tut’s introduced reusable cups, removing over 55,000 plastic cups from our waste since July 2023.   - Our office and venue are on 100% renewable tariffs, and we have continued investing in 100% sustainably sourced biofuel to power event generators.   - Outdoor events had a combined average 63% material recovery rate - a 1% increase from last year.  - Successfully implemented a zero-plastic policy at our events at Royal Highland Showgrounds.  - Measured indirect emissions impact from audience and employee travel for the first time.   - Created the ‘Play Your Part’ campaign, advocating for climate action across fan, artist and employee communication channels.  - Worked with a wide range of organisations to promote social and environmental sustainability, including Zero Waste Scotland, Tiny Changes, Greenpeace, Music Broth, Eden Project, Glasgow Eco Trust, Advanced Clothing Solutions and Re:volve Recycling.  - These engagements had a positive impact on our fan experiences and for the organisations themselves. For example, Re:volve made over £3000 selling pre-loved and handmade clothing and accessories through their shop at Connect.  - 67% of food traders at our events offered at least one plant-based alternative on their menus.  - Began Carbon Literacy Training our employees. We can’t wait to welcome back more fans and artists to help us play our part this summer, where we’ll be introducing circular waste solutions to some of our bars, improving energy efficiency, innovating with renewable energy, arranging biodiversity surveys of the sites we work on, reviewing and enhancing the ‘Play Your Part’ climate actions campaign, further increasing availability of plant-based offerings, and much more.  We’ve already started laying plans for next year’s events. Here's this weeks instalment: Coldplay’s greener tour 💚 In 2019 the band Coldplay pledged to not tour again until it could be done with lower impact. In 2021 they announced their 12-point plan to reduce the tour's carbon footprint by 50%.Now in 2024, they have shared that the Music of Spheres World Tour (2022-2024) has so far surpassed their CO2 emissions reduction target, hitting a 59% reduction on a show-by-show comparison. Here are some highlights and key changes made for the Music of Spheres World Tour: ✅ One tree has been planted for each concertgoer, totalling so far 7 million trees across 24 counties  ✅ Stages sets built with sustainable, reusable materials and show confetti is 100% biodegradable  ✅ Kinetic dance floors, energy-storing stationary bikes and solar panels have generated an average of 17kWh during each show, used to power the venue  ✅ 72% of all tour waste has been diverted from landfills and sent for reuse, recycling or composting  ✅ The tour route has been consciously planned to reduce air travel. Where air travel is necessary they pay a surcharge to use or supply sustainable aviation fuel These are just a couple of highlights, every aspect of the tour has been carefully considered. The band has also financially contributed to a number of excellent environmental and socially conscious projects and charities. That’s what I call leading by example! Festival season is upon us. Huge musical events are happening (#TaylorSwift #Pink #Foofighters #download) and one of things the Waste Guru can’t believe is the fact that there are huge restrictions in place that can support a minimisation of waste. For example: No bottles over 500ml’s No bottles with lids No refillable bottles Nothing larger than an A4 bag. The list goes on. The team at Titan Resource Management believes it's important to allow refillable bottles at events because it aligns with the goals of World Refill Day. (19th June.) By promoting the use of refillable bottles, we can contribute to the prevention of plastic pollution and encourage people to live with less waste. Refillable bottles offer a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic bottles, reducing the amount of plastic waste generated at events. By allowing refillable bottles, we can show our commitment to taking action on plastic pollution and promoting reuse as a solution. Additionally, choosing to reuse through refillable bottles saves millions of pieces of plastic and sends a powerful message that together we can keep our environment, oceans, and communities plastic-free for the future. By participating in World Refill Day and promoting the use of refillable bottles at events, we can make a positive impact on reducing single-use plastic and creating a more sustainable future. So we do not understand why events are putting these restrictions into place. One event organiser said “ We are aware that people may throw the lids from bottles onto the stage risking the health of the performers, this is why we are minimising bottles to a certain size to reduce the risk.” The Waste Guru highlighted are they going to confiscate everyone’s change as a pound coin would do far more damage than a bottle lid…… The official response “no comment.” Is that the issue now. We are too scared to make comments, to create change or simply believe most people will not be sensible and adult about reusable products. Solar-Powered Environmental Impact☀️ Deployed a solar-powered River Interceptor, removing 158 tonnes of waste and 13 tonnes of ocean-bound plastic. Sustainable LED Wristbands🌈 Demonstrated an 86% return rate of reusable, plant-based LED wristbands, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices. Renewable Energy for Shows🕺 Generated an average of 15kWh per show using in-venue solar installations, kinetic dance floors, and power bikes.
