We unknowingly ingest about 5 grams of microplastics per week, which is roughly the weight of a 💳 credit card. Part of this enters our bodies through 😲 inhalation, but we also find it in our food and drinking 🚰 water. Microplastics are defined as small pieces of plastic, which are less than 5 mm 📏 (0.2 inch) in length, that occur in the environment as a consequence of plastic pollution. Microplastics are present in a variety of products, from 💄 cosmetics to synthetic 👚 clothing to plastic bags and bottles. Many of these products readily enter the environment in wastes. Microplastics consist of carbon and hydrogen atoms bound together in polymer chains. Other chemicals, such as phthalates, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), are typically also present in microplastics, and many of these chemical additives leach out of the plastics after entering the environment. Between 1950 and 2015, it is estimated that some 6,300 million metric tons of #plasticwaste were generated. The majority of this waste, about 4,900 million metric tons, ended up in landfills and the environment. On the basis of trends from that period, researchers estimated that by 2050 the amount of plastic waste in landfills and the environment would reach 12,000 million metric tons. 😱 The media increasingly reports on this issue, and policymakers have slowly started to acknowledged the problem 🤔. World Environment Day (05 June), led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is celebrated by millions of people around the world. This year it’s asking us to ‘make peace with the land’ by helping to restore forests, water sources and soils. UNEP has warned that the equivalent of one football pitch of soil is eroded every five seconds, yet it takes 1,000 years to generate 3cm of topsoil.Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50% within the decade and plastic waste flowing into our water systems will nearly triple by 2040. If we protect our environment it will protect us; trees in urban areas can cool the air by up to 5°C, reducing air conditioning needs by 25%.Lakes, rivers and wetlands hold 20-30% of global carbon, despite occupying only 5-8% of its land surface.
