In 2023 we awarded a seed grant to Ecopracticas for "New Voices, New Horizons", a groundbreaking project aimed at amplifying fresh narratives surrounding our collective carbon footprint and its implications for the future, particularly through the eyes of youth. This initiative is not just about raising awareness; it's about empowering young voices to shape the discourse and drive action towards a more sustainable world. "New Voices, New Horizons" serves as a catalyst for change, bringing together a team of passionate professionals with diverse backgrounds in sustainable development, journalism, sociology, education, and business. At the heart of this project is a commitment to collaboration, transdisciplinary thinking, and intergenerational dialogue. Drawing from their experiences in advocacy and education through the EcoPrácticas Foundation, the team is dedicated to fostering innovative approaches that resonate with younger generations. Thanks to support from a TPP grant, "New Voices, New Horizons" has launched a dynamic media platform, providing a space for young leaders to showcase their initiatives and ideas for sustainable development. Additionally, they have revitalized a 12-year-old educational campaign, focusing on community-based projects led by youth. Through this initiative, Ecopracticas is not only amplifying the voices of the next generation but also inspiring action and driving meaningful change towards a more sustainable future for all. In the ever-evolving world of social impact, the buzzword 'power building' often has become more prevalent in philanthropy, especially after the racial reckoning of 2020. Many foundations zero in on "Power Building" (i.e. shaping policy) as the ultimate lever of change. Policy work is critical, yes, but what if we're missing a fundamental piece of the puzzle? At STEM to the Future, we're flipping the script on where power resides. We contend that we are the powers that be. Power isn't just in the hands of those who craft policy—it thrives within the vibrant minds of our youth and the resilience of marginalized communities. We're not focused on changing policies yet; we're about transforming perceptions. We are creating the alternative. Our work shifts the seat of power to young Black and brown kids and marginalized voices, supporting them as they realize and harness their inherent power. By revolutionizing educational methods, and focusing on liberatory pedagogy, we're showing kids not only that they possess power but also how they can wield it effectively. Imagine a curriculum that doesn't only inform but ignites. Ignites thought, belief, change. A learning experience that doesn't passively wait for change but actively creates it. What happens when we start to see young people not as future leaders or worse simply as workers but as today's changemakers? What can be achieved when we invest in their ideas now, validate their experiences, and amplify their voices? While we don't focus on policy change, we are dedicated to power-building in its most authentic form—by nurturing the innovators, creators, and leaders of today. Is social impact the new buzzword? Why does it feel like everyone is starting a new social impact initiative or project? A friend asked me this recently. Here’s what I told her. Yes, there’s been a rise in people pursuing social impact as careers or to give back to society. On one hand, the popularity of social impact can be attributed to the times we are currently in. Perhaps, there has never been a time in history when social justice was more needed. For example, I live in a country (Nigeria) where social services don’t really exist and citizens have to provide those services for themselves. It’s only natural that social impact initiatives are springing up to fill this gap. Also, young people have access to relevant information about what’s going on around them and in the world, like never before. Children as young as 5 years old see, live and understand concepts like climate justice, racial and gender equity, democracy, and of course, the SDGs. It’s only natural that young people would want to do something with this information. Besides, this generation isn’t one to just look. They want to be active participants in solving the problems. On the flip side, social impact can be enticing for the wrong reasons. Some people are drawn to social impact because of the shiny opportunities (ironic because the sector is underfunded for the most part). They see young leaders speaking at the United Nations, fully-funded engagements and award ceremonies and they want a piece of that too. In my opinion though, the good outweighs the bad. Over the past few years, I’ve met incredible young leaders who are truly passionate about solving problems. Young people who put their sweat, tears, blood and resources (despite a lack of) into the work they do. Even when no one believed in them. So it’s neither here nor there. What I would say is: Whatever you do, make sure you are doing it for the right reasons. Because when all is said and done, it’s true passion (your why) that keeps you going. We should focus on what unites us, not what divides us. If everything we work on together must be framed as a matter of social justice, then intergenerational work will have limited impact. To be able to move forward together, we need to understand not just what the other person thinks, but why they think what they think and how they see acting on their values in the workplace."
