I am a loyal Google customer, but today I am no longer a Google employee. This week ends a two year journey as a remote employee within Google’s Real Estate and Workplace Services (REWS) group. My call to action? Bring your industry background and expertise in house to help us address the novel hybrid work conundrum with data driven workplace strategies, experiments, tools and systems thinking. My discovery? Google, like many enterprise organizations, must confront the awkwardness of hybrid - a bunching of the 5 day work week into 3- resulting in the reality that the office is too much while also not enough. My takeaway- REWS is full of many dedicated, talented, resourceful, creative and rigorous folks. The team cares deeply for the Googler experience. With the best of the best colleagues, mentors and managers we worked to build data rich, evidence based, empathetic, central and holistic strategies to solve for top hybrid work priorities. This is a deeply committed team, often riding rough and turbulent waters, aiming to stay course in a sea of evolving hybrid needs and expectations. I wish captain Scott Foster and the REWS crew the very best as they continue to chart the future of the workplace for all Googlers across the globe. For me, I’m jumping off the big cruise ship, back to my own speed boat. More on that soon. After recently leaving a Workplace Experience/Services team, I wish more team leaders in this niche field cared about and saw the value in the service/UX design aspect of The Workplace for a company - especially with the huge push from upper management to get people back into the office when there has been a massive cultural shift amongst the atmosphere of corporate workers who want better and more intentional work/life balance. I was passionate about this type of work, but felt really unheard and undervalued as an experience designer.
