Climate tech has not been immune to the tech slow down in recent years, but as society increasingly realizes it must race to net zero greenhouse gas emissions, it continues to spark interest from VCs. After all, many of the innovations needed to slash carbon emissions may not have been invented yet. Now new innovative spaces are catching the eyes of investors, like energy, food waste, nature restoration, and space tech that can verify carbon credit projects or predict wildfire risk. It was such a pleasure to introduce the Carbon13 Climate Showcase Day at Cambridge University Union last week, alongside the brilliant Nicky Dee. We have been fortunate enough to work with the Carbon13 venture builder for the last few years, supporting its startups as they look to solve some of prickliest issues in decarbonisation. Personally, I have been running climate policy sessions for the founders, and it has been so exciting to see concepts we talked about in those sessions come into fruition: be it financial cases predicated on mitigation of carbon pricing exposure or f-gas leakage penalisation such as Cocoon and Climate-i, through to a solution to help get the market ready for the new wave of carbon border taxes in Cbamboo. Other highlights from last week were hearing about the amazing technology being developed at Deep Blue BioTech and Adia, and the innovative information crowdsource model being employed by Mozaic Earth. 2 climate events in 2 days and everyone talking about funding gaps across all stages in UK Climatetech (one event was later stage and the other earlier). Mostly about the risk and return profiles of the full spectrum of climatetech as it moves out of its first phase from the last few years, i.e. longer horizons, tech vs new markets risk, lack of incentives and that it can look more like infrastructure than software (or somewhere in between). Square peg, round hole anyone? Off to another climate event tomorrow, will it be a hat-trick of this being a key issue holding UK Climatetech back again?
