First-generation is an identity shared by dozens of Duke University School of Law students. 🎓 They are the first in their families to pursue college education, the first to attend professional schools, or the first to become lawyers. There are unique pressures of law school for students who self-identify as either first-generation professionals or first-generation college students. These range from difficulties with networking to timidness in approaching professors, impostor syndrome, or socioeconomic barriers. In this article, we're highlighting how these barriers aren't deterrents for first-gen students who wish to pursue legal education at Duke through the lens of two student groups that have come together to advocate for resources and representation for this diverse group. 🌐📚 #dukeuniversity #dukelawschool #lawschool #firstgeneration

En route to Yale Law School! Tomorrow, I look forward to speaking with Yale American Constitution Society and Title IX Student Advocates about Asking the *Right* Questions Before Clerking. 📢📢 Law students - regardless of their #lawschool ranking and clerkship resources - universally lack candid, transparent information about judges’ managerial style, chambers culture, and a diversity of clerkship experiences. Law school networks and faculty relationships may help students *obtain* #clerkships, but that’s of limited value when students lack an understanding of the work environment they're entering. No law student has enough information to be an informed and discerning consumer of #clerkship opportunities. The Legal Accountability Project is changing that *this* clerkship application cycle. Thanks to the YLS student leaders for inviting me back, and to Margo Darragh for agreeing to reprise her role as moderator! I look forward to a robust discussion at a law school where #clerking is top of mind for many students. YLS students: come learn about LAP’s Centralized Clerkships Database, the innovative first-of-its-kind #transparency resource LAP built, and how you can access candid #clerkship information right now! #clerkships #courts #judiciary #transparency #lawschools #lawschoolroadshow

First Day of the New Semester - Time for new beginnings! Today is the first day of our Spring Semester at the University of Baltimore School of Law, I start the day with professional responsibility! Many of you probably have returned or are in the process of returning from winter break. 1Ls - Use this new beginning. - If you didn't like your grades last semester use this time to reflect on what did and did not work. - If you were happy with your grades, find a way to keep up what you have been doing. Now is not the time to get complacent, I am only speaking from experience here. - Try to find at least one topic covered in each class to get excited about. Law is a fascinating subject, but some of the subjects can be a bit dry. Some professors can make a dry subject fun and others can make a fun subject dry. I have always found that if I kept something interesting for myself it helped. - If you got behind on any particular thing last semester make sure that you have a plan in place for it not to happen this semester. What class are you most excited about this semester? I'm excited about a master class in trial advocacy I'm taking between the two Maryland law schools this semester. #1Ls #lawstudents #LawSchool

Last week, I (sadly) bid farewell to my exceptional and thoughtful students in my Critical Race Studies course at University of California, Hastings College of the Law (now UC Law San Francisco). In these times, it is crucial to methodically study how law shapes race and vice versa. I am grateful for all that I have learned and continue to learn from my students and friends in the Critical Race Studies Program at University of California, Los Angeles - School of Law. #criticalracestudies #racematters #lawschool #lawprofessor

The question of who's a first-generation student is not as easy as it seems. The common application used for college admission uses the definition in the 1998 Higher Education Act Amendments which defines first generation as a student whose parent(s) didn't earn a bachelor's degree. But some colleges define it as students whose parents never attended college. Some consider a student whose parents earned degrees in other countries as first-gen and others define it as students who may self-identify as not having prior exposure to or knowledge of navigating higher institutions. The definition becomes even more complex for students who are entering law school. Law students who are born into families with generations of lawyers come into law school equipped with the knowledge, resources, and connections they need to succeed. Many first-generation students and first-generation law students don't come equipped with these tools in their toolbox, but at Duke University School of Law students are finding community and shared identity in student organizations such as First Class and 1GP under the leadership of Melissa Antonia Perez, Grace Castillo Shearman, Brandon Bishop and others and they are THRIVING!! #belongingmatters #firstgeneration #firstgen
First-generation students find community and shared identity in student organizations 1GP and First Class. Students in 1GP find community in being the first in their families to attend a professional school or to become lawyers. For students who identify as first-generation college or come from low-income backgrounds, a new student organization, First Class, was established in spring of 2023. “There’s a wide range of needs when you look at this population. For individuals who don’t come from households where their parents know how to navigate or are part of these spaces, these student groups at Duke Law play vitally important roles. They are providing academic and social support to help those students build and develop a network that will help them in law school and beyond,” says Alison Ashe-Card, associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion. “Transitioning here was jarring at first, and I think that is a common experience among first-generation students, but figuring out the uncharted territory for myself and for the people in my family has given me a sense of empowerment. It’s reassuring that, because I’m on a completely new path, I can chart my own way from here,” says 1GP President Brandon Bishop ‘25.

The Legal Accountability Project's work takes me to beautiful places! This fall, I enjoyed visiting (or returning to) University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, George Mason University - Antonin Scalia Law School, Boston University School of Law, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, Georgetown University Law Center, University of Chicago Law School (virtually), and Columbia Law School. I'm looking forward to visiting more schools this spring! For many law students, LAP's programming is the first time they hear about a negative #clerkship experience like mine and learn the federal #judiciary is exempt from Title VII of the CRA, meaning it's particularly important for students to be mindful about who they clerk for, in a way they currently cannot be, due to the lack of #transparency in hiring. LAP has been demoing our #legaltech product, a Centralized Clerkships Database, for law schools and encouraging them to subscribe THIS year so students can access this resource THIS clerkship application cycle. We’re galvanizing student support and encouraging students to urge their administrations to participate. LAP’s programming educates students about the right questions to ask before clerking, as well as larger injustices in the #courts. We empower students to advocate and demand better - including from their #lawschools. We combat the overwhelmingly positive clerkship messaging - including by sharing my own experience - so it’s more realistic and balanced. Sadly, there are a few schools LAP still hasn't visited, where our messaging hasn't reached enough students. There’s still time! LAP is planning our spring programming right now. Reach out to me to discuss opportunities to bring LAP's work to your campus. I’m proud that LAP has changed the messaging, programming, and #clerkship advising on many campuses over the past 18 months. When I launched LAP, my negative clerkship experience, while not rare, was one that was rarely shared publicly, due to the culture of silence and fear surrounding the #judiciary. LAP now fosters candid dialogue about the full range of clerkship experiences wherever we go, educating and empowering students. #clerkships #courts #empowerment #lawschools
