Yesterday was the in-person intro of the Impact Ventures Capital Readiness Accelerator. I came in thinking I would just learn about setting up business accounts and applying for grants, but it was much deeper than that. Here are my 3 key takeaways: Vulnerability is Powerful: Benjamin J. Vann turned a room of strong willed strangers into a close-knit group in just two hours. Vulnerability really does lead to amazing connections and flow of energy both personally and for your business. 2. Understanding Your Story: Growing up, my parents prioritized my education no matter where we lived. This experience instilled in me the value of empowerment, a passion I now realize drives my desire to help others. 3. Redefining Community: The session reminded me that community isn’t just an abstract concept. It’s the people around us. I left inspired to impact the thoughts and systems that shape my community. From the article: I am reminded of how different the experiences and motivations of Black business owners are from those of White business owners. Black business owners are motivated to start their companies because they need income not just for themselves but for the people around them. Black founders are driven by a desire and sense of responsibility to create financial stability that can lead to generational opportunities for their communities and families. This is why I think so many Black founders struggle with the pathway of venture capital. The notion of selling a company for public trade takes them further from the true purpose of their businesses to provide immediate and sustainable resources for the people around them instead of for some far-off master called the shareholder." The biggest challenges as Christian founders are often.. 1. The tension between the love of God versus the venture building for maximizing profit 2. Burn out and mental health the words from Dave Blanchard, that I resonate with. As the past few months in running my venture & newly launched foundation, the busyness of work can easily shrinks the soul. When fatigue enters, the initial love and empathy for the people we serve can become burdensome and overwhelming. I took time to be at the worlds premier gathering of 400 of some of the best Christian venture builders, funders & entrepreneurs. as the hold spaces for me.  The Praxis builds on the idea on Redemptive entrepreneurship— How can our ventures intentionally pursue the restoration of justice and wellbeing in this world? One of the breakout groups I attended was “Encountering and persevering through apparent failures”, with panelists Vivian Long, Dave Evans, Anna Jung and Thomas Kim. It speak that we got to be ready for failures for when it happen. We usually ask, “Does God ever call me to failure?” That is the wrong question.It is that “God calls us to the things that can fail!” The 2-day summit, gathering and processing with fellow founders who are trying to solve human’s challenges of poverty, homelessness, trafficking & healthcare, has refreshed me with new hope. Firstly because I learn to put people> ventures. And the hope for restoration through our work indeed can only be done in community.
