We all know that what gets measured get’s done, right? The impact of philanthropic donations is not always clear. Well, I attended the launch this week at Minter Ellison of a survey which would be fascinating for many of our clients. Australians Investing In Women (AIIW) in partnership with the Champions of Change Coalition brought us a presentation by Garreth Chandler of the findings from AIIW’s inaugural State of Gender-wise Giving Survey 2023. The survey explores the consideration of gender in giving by the AFR’s Top 50 corporate and private philanthropists. The results were very interesting and if you care what impact your money is having on girls and women. I encourage you to get in get in touch with Australians Investing In Women [email protected]. They are sending benchmarking to those who contributed to the survey so that they can know and improve the impact of their giving. I strongly suggest you get involved in the next survey if you can. Great kickoff to the 2024 programming year for the Charlotte chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP Global). Dianne Chipps Bailey shared insights from the 2023 Bank of America Study on Philanthropy (focusing on affluent/accredited investor donors). High level trends: 💡 2022 giving was down slightly from pandemic induced highs in 2020 (last study) 💡 Donor participation has declined since befor the great recession - 98% to 85% of affluent households + 66% to 56% of all Americans. What is needed to help connect potential donors with #nonprofits? 💡 78% of giving is done locally - which is how i tend to give! 💡 85% of household giving is led or influenced by women - the future of philanthropy is female! 💡 Only 19 percent of givers include multiple generations in their giving decisions. What a great opportunity to get the wisdom of older generations and discuss/clarify family values with the next generation! 💡 The main reasons households stop giving to a particular non-profit - too many unpersonalized asks and replacing with another non-profit that fit philanthropic goals more closely 💡 Of those individuals who volunteer, 32% of men and 16% of women are on boards. This can be more informal giving like GoFundMe or through #impactinvesting or #conciousconsumerism. About 25% of donors say that #impactinvesting + #conciousconsumerism replaces some or all of their #philantrophy. Three Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP) chapters (GTA, Ottawa, Niagara/Golden Horseshoe) hosted a session about Canadian women and philanthropy (https://lnkd.in/gduKWizV). The hybrid format allowed hundreds to attend. Jess Merber, FEA made the introductions, and Candice Jay, CIM® FCSI® MFA-P™ moderated. The panelists were Jo-Anne Ryan, FEA, MFA-P, Sharon Avery and Anne Maggisano, CFA. The main topic was TD Bank's about-to-be-released report, "Trust and Transformation: Canadian Women in Philanthropy." Notable trends include the significant growth in women's wealth over the next decade from inheritances and income. Women are also claiming more charitable donations on their tax returns each year. Events like the pandemic, the BLM movement, and awareness of Indigenous issues have influenced their philanthropic priorities. The new study provides more diverse perspectives by intentionally including women from the LGBTQ2S+, Indigenous, immigrant and newcomer communities. Trust-based or unrestricted giving emerged as an essential model to help nonprofits during COVID-19. While total dollars donated by women are rising, the number of individual donors has declined, reflecting broader societal inequities. Financial advisors need to engage more clients in strategic philanthropy conversations. CAGP helps educate via the national Professional Advisor Network organized by Candice and Diana Mao. Three important takeaways from this report: 1) Trust - This is an essential factor in philanthropic decision-making for most women.  What are you doing to earn - and maintain - the trust of your donors? The first step is to define and understand what this means to you personally and to your organization.  How do you know that your donors trust you? 2) Real Change - women are more and more focused on being part of real, systemic change.  What does this mean for the stories you tell about the impact of your work? 3) Room for Progress - there is still a lot of room for women to effect change with their donations, and being recruited to Boards.  Are you thinking about how women can be even stronger leaders in driving policy and systemic change in your organization and throughout the philanthropic sector?
