Seeking out the highest level of DEI expertise at the lowest possible price is not “fiscal prudence”. There are many things that I am conscious about doing in my work. One of them is to ensure that clients understand how a lack of understanding about different cultural norms, linguistics, semantics and semiotics can impede progress within the diversity and inclusion agenda. We talk about diversity and inclusion, but do we really understand the impact of culture in the workplace? I know we often speak about a level playing field for employees, and that is important, but do we understand how people from different cultures articulate information in different ways, or how information which is received can be understood differently? Not only is an understanding of cultural differences important to building an environment that is competent, it is paramount for informing an organisational framework that is adept to overcoming cultural and racial barriers. Systems and frameworks that are created through a racially homogeneous mindset, miss this, and that cannot be avoided. You cannot understand what you don’t know. In order to make organisational processes effective, and culturally competent, one requires an understanding of culture.
