Tuesday’s death was a tragic loss and entirely preventable. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that it will be the only death we see this winter season. If the Mayor’s administration focused on collaborating with outreach, social service workers, and the communities we serve, instead of criminalizing the survival of those experiencing houselessness and those working to solve it, we likely would not be in this position. It is high time for the city to stop the sweeps, implement rent control, and redistribute funding to those doing the work. If we have millions of dollars to renovate the Bellevedere or to bring a WNBA team to the city, we have the money to invest in single-site supportive housing, to invest in transitional housing, and overall to invest in the health and well-being of our communities directly. It’s time we roll back the anti-camping ordinance and stop the impending anti-camping legislation at the state level. Mayor Greenburg, Deputy Mayor Nicole George, and Chief Gwinnett-Villarreal - let people live and let us do our jobs.

when I see these companies building these apartments and throw in the word affordable living. Affordable to who? if the average person who gets up every day work their butts off can't afford to live in one. it's not affordable to the community as a whole. It's only affordable to a certain people that are in a particular financial bracket. Most people can't rent a one bedroom apartment without a roommate to pay half. It doesn't matter how much more apartments you build, it will never solve the homelessness. It's not more buildings that you need, there are enough buildings out there.

Housing provides more than shelter - it's a place where people and families learn and grow. Housing helps us stay employed, do better in school, and access community services. A safe and secure home gives us the stability we need to face life's challenges and provides a foundation to help us thrive. Having a home isn't just a basic need - it is essential to our health and well-being. Food Insecurity and Housing Instability Are Inextricably Linked About 10.4 million (25.4 percent of renter-occupied units) are spending half or more of their incomes on shelter, leaving families without adequate resources to pay for food. This depletion of family resources to cover rent helps explain the intersection of hunger and housing instability as well as the need for anti-hunger stakeholders to champion polices to support affordable housing. Sarasota and Bradenton are no exception. Until affordable housing is available, the Mayors' Feed the Hungry Program reaches out to help feed those in need.
