Last Wednesday I had a fantastic evening at an Evelyn Partners (one of London’s leading providers of legal support to scaling businesses) Entrepreneurial Minds event. Dominic Joseph talked us through his incredible journey from rock-stardom, touring with The Killers among others, through the challenges of start-up founding to his nine-digit exit from Captify®. Dominic’s humble, honest reflections were super insightful and genuinely helpful. Here are some of the key things we learned:   - Drive hard for radical candour, even from people you trust; everyone glosses over the cracks sometimes. - Go large on your series A negotiations, sell the dream. - Go warts and all on your series B, tell potential investors what their money will fix and what that might mean for growth.  - And hold a little back on your exit, let you buyers find something great about your potential that you haven’t told them 😉   And on top of Dominic’s fantastic story, there was more learning to be had from the stellar audience of investors and entrepreneurs that Evelyn had managed to assemble.  I met people that have built and sold household brands, that book our train journeys and capture our special memories, even someone that grows brains (no, seriously).     Congratulations and thank you to Nick Travis and all at Evelyn Partners for setting up a fantastic evening that exemplified the excitement, talent and diversity of the London Tech scene, bravo!    #Innovation #Investemnt #scaleups #exitstrategy #businessgrowth #tech #M&A Form1 Partners

Recently, I found myself on the shoulders of unexpected giants: million-dollar businesses, multiple exits, scalable education, angel investors, and tech no one ever thinks about. Meanwhile, I'm a newbie #founder with a camera, going from 0 to 1 🙂 . I met them at the Founders Circle SG/BKK hosted by Paul Meyers and HReasily last weekend. I had no idea what to expect ,but I was quickly surprised at the conversation I found myself in. It was refreshing to hear other entrepreneurs' challenges and contribute to the conversation. #perspectives Speaking to other founders is truly a new experience but holds a familiar feeling. The best way I can describe it is talking to colleagues again, which is a great remedy for entrepreneurial loneliness. Some key thing I took away was that no matter where you are in the journey, there's always something that needs fixing, and you can't dwell on past mistakes. Reflect, put together a plan, and try again. Fast. Speaking to other founders helps a lot with putting ideas in place and re-prioritising. Highly recommend coming out to one of these #free meet-ups organised in SG or BKK. They use this knowledge to their advantage and actively find ways to bridge this gap that many founders overlook.

The hard reality that we come to realise at some point. 1. Even as an entrepreneur, you are answerable to someone else and you have to manage the board. And the board will come with all sorts of characters whether you like it or not. No board member is truly independent - they all have their own agendas 2. Even as a VC, you are like an entrepreneur managing the expectations of the LP 3. Perhaps the happiest and politics free role is being a small business entrepreneur, with a niche, profitable, and bootstrapped. Steve Jobs famously said that if you look at the feats of human civilization - be it massive engineering, architecture, or even cities they wont have committees, but an individual with a vision. How to create large scale impact without having to get into this cycle of having to do consensus building with another group of people - be it investors, board, or bureaucracy is the question to ask. Note : The purpose of a governing body makes sense, but where is the line between governance and stiffling the organization. Mark Zuckerberg has figured this out to some extent.
