Shark Awareness Day - 14th July 2024 Shark Awareness Day is celebrated annually on the 14th of July to highlight the importance of sharks to our marine ecosystems and to dispel the myths and misconceptions surrounding these magnificent creatures. Sharks play a critical role in maintaining the health of the oceans, acting as apex predators that help regulate the populations of other marine species. The Significance of Sharks Sharks have existed for over 400 million years and are an essential part of the marine food web. They help maintain the balance of marine ecosystems by keeping the populations of prey species in check, which in turn affects the entire marine environment. Healthy shark populations are indicative of a healthy ocean. Threats to Sharks Despite their importance, sharks are facing numerous threats, primarily from human activities. Overfishing, bycatch, and the demand for shark fins have led to a significant decline in shark populations worldwide. Habitat destruction and climate change also pose serious threats to their survival. Raising Awareness Shark Awareness Day is an opportunity for conservationists, scientists, and the general public to come together to promote the protection and conservation of sharks. Educational events, social media campaigns, and community activities are organized to spread knowledge about sharks and their plight. WORLD AQUATIC ANIMAL DAY. DID YOU KNOW? - According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), approximately 37% of assessed freshwater fish species are threatened with extinction. - Aquatic ecosystems are home to a staggering amount of biodiversity, including fish, marine mammals, turtles, crustaceans, and countless other species. These ecosystems provide crucial habitats and breeding grounds for many organisms, contributing to the overall health and resilience of the planet's ecosystems. - Aquatic animals play essential roles in ecosystem functions, such as nutrient cycling, water filtration, and carbon sequestration. Aquatic animals are not only a source of wonder and awe; they are also essential components of complex food webs and ecosystems. From the tiniest plankton to the largest predators, each species plays a unique role in regulating populations, cycling nutrients, and maintaining the overall health of marine and freshwater environments. Aquatic animals face a lot of threats today: habitat destruction, pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Coral reefs are vanishing, fish stocks declining, and plastic pollution is rampant. To safeguard their future, we must tackle the root causes like pollution and overfishing. This means creating marine protected areas, promoting sustainable fishing, and conserving critical habitats. World Wildlife Day 2024 “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” Wildlife is the untouched version of nature that resides unravelled in most places in the world, including mammals, fish species, plants, etc., which are undomesticated by humans. Wildlife serves as the foundation of evolutionary human life, which has become the most vital part of the ecosystem. Upon consideration of the importance of wildlife, the United Nations established March 3rd as World Wildlife Day to raise awareness about the necessity of preserving and protecting wildlife, as well as to promote sustainable practices that can help conserve biodiversity. Wildlife provides several environmental and socio-economic services to both humans and nature. It balances the biodiversity of the earth while also protecting humans from various natural calamities. However, humans continue to destroy these vital pillars of the environment. Among the concerns, plastic pollution has become one of the biggest threats to the wildlife ecosystem. Continuous disposal of plastic waste in open waters like the sea, rivers, lakes, etc. and disposal of plastic waste all over the place, including places rich in wildlife, have had a bad effect on the everyday lives of wildlife species. For instance, thousands of seabirds, sea turtles, seals, and other marine mammals are killed each year after ingesting plastic or getting entangled in it. As responsible human beings, we should understand the importance of wildlife ecosystems in order to protect and preserve them for generations to come. Therefore,  let's reduce the plastic usage and dispose of it in a proper manner in order to give wildlife space and the opportunity to grow and reproduce freely without stress. Celebrating Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day brings awareness to the value of MPAs and how they benefit both us and the incredible marine biodiversity they are designed to protect. 🌊 What’s an MPA? A Marine Protected Area is an area of coastline or ocean that is specially protected for the benefit of people and nature. Think of it like underwater parks – the National Parks of the oceans. 🌊 Why celebrate MPA Day? The oceans are home to an amazing diversity of life that sustains this planet, shapes climate and weather, and provides food and life-saving discoveries. But our oceans are under increasing threat from the impacts of pollution, habitat loss, overharvesting, and climate change. And while terrestrial protected areas are well known, the same cannot be said for their marine counterparts. MPAs are critical for the conservation of valuable marine biodiversity and play an important role in ensuring the productivity of adjacent marine areas, thereby directly benefiting coastal resource users. 🌊 What about locally? Our local Marine Protected Area right off the coast of Massachusetts is Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS), one of the world’s most productive marine ecosystems and home to historic fisheries and whale feeding grounds. GMGI scientists have been working in SBNMS since 2017, using modern genomic tools to uncover a wealth of unseen biodiversity, down to the smallest microbes. Working with NOAA managers, GMGI Scientists are developing a framework to integrate genetic diversity into conservation practices to preserve and protect SBNMS into the future. By celebrating MPA DAY, a clear statement can be made that no matter where you live, we can all help to protect the ocean. The earth’s health is closely tied to the health of our ocean, and MPAs are one of the best ways to ensure ocean health.

Did you know? - what butterflies can tell you about your direct environment?… During the most recent biodiversity monitoring event I attended with Laura Kooijman from idverde NL at Wienerberger Deutschland, we spotted this amazing creature 🦋. This beautiful peacock butterfly, although often hidden, displays its eye-like patterns to deter predators. The lifespan of a butterfly depends on its species and environment, with some living only a few days. The pretty fella we observed at the Wienerberger Deutschland plant appeared to have reached the end of its lifecycle, evident from its tattered wings. However, there is no need for concern! Because It has left behind a legacy. Before reaching their final stage, butterflies lay eggs to reproduce, carefully hiding them in rolled-up leaves. And now, one of the coolest facts about butterflies: Did you know that spotting butterflies is an indicator of a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem? 🌍 1 Million species are on the edge of extinction 😢 🐾 And 881 animal species have already gone extinct since 1500 because of humans. I'm excited to share that today we have launched Purina Europe's first Ocean Restoration Programme! 🌊 We are partnering with expert organisations to help restore more than 1,500 hectares of marine habitats in Europe by 2030. 🌍 Ocean health is essential for all life on earth - the ocean supports billions of people across the world, regulates the climate and promotes biodiversity. 📉 As a result of climate change and human activities, marine habitats are declining at an alarming rate, and these are critical for many species, including fish. 🐟 At Purina Europe, fish are part of our extended supply chain (fish by-products) and we want to play a role in helping to restore the ecosystems from which we source. 🌱 Through the programme, we’re investing in the marine restoration solutions of our partners across Europe who are focused on restoring seagrass meadows, oyster reefs and kelp forests (seaweed) which provide vital habitat for marine life including fish. 🤝 We hope that the programme will foster collaboration between the partners to help address common challenges they face, as well as advancing science and methodologies in marine habitat restoration.
