🔍L'Oréal's SFDR Journey: Beyond the Surface of Sustainable Investments Novethic published a study where it identifies the 20 companies most frequently found in Article 9 funds, recognized under SFDR as 'sustainable investments'. Among these, L'Oréal stands out. However, a deeper dive into L'Oréal's sustainability efforts show a different side of the reality. 🌱Our positive taxonomy integrate several frameworks, such as the EU Taxonomy, SDG Targets, IRIS+ and United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI). Based on that, we identified 2 activities that can contribute positive to environmental or social objectives: - The first is the improvement of access to social protection systems by offering insurance solutions for smallholders (INES); - The second is the release of specific funding for the creation of an impact fund dedicated to circular innovation. While these activities generate positive contributions to environmental and social objectives, these contributions are minimal since they are less than 0.01%. L'Oréal's case illustrates a broader challenge within the SFDR framework – the necessity for rigor in evaluating the 'positive contributions'. Despite meeting most criteria, the financial materiality of these contributions falls short. It emphasizes the importance of a rigorous, transparent assessment of sustainability efforts, ensuring they're not just marginal but integral to a company's business model. 🌱 Sustainable investing is becoming a powerful force in financial markets, attracting investors seeking financial returns while prioritizing hashtag #ESG criteria. 🇩🇪 Germany, known for its commitment to sustainability, excels in growth, employment, social security, and environmental protection. Many German companies are dedicated to their social responsibility, making it one of the world’s most sustainable industrialized nations. We have just released a report that covers an in-depth analysis of corporate sustainability in Germany, focusing on recent years while also considering historical data. The report examines the efforts and achievements of German companies in various sectors regarding their ESG performance. Some highlights include: ▶ In 2023, 36% of German companies had dedicated sustainability departments, and 9% had cross-departmental sustainability management. ▶ Only 15% of the public felt industries had done enough to protect the environment, with environmental organizations perceived as leading efforts. ▶ 80% of B2B companies reduced energy usage, and 59% implemented paperless processes to enhance sustainability. ▶ Digitalization spending is predicted to drop from 23% in 2023 to 7% in 2024, indicating that companies are reducing digitalization spending, potentially impacting sustainability advancements. ▶ Accelerated digitalization in the energy sector could save 26.4 million tons of CO2 by 2030. ▶ In 2023, 54% of companies cited lack of time and qualified workers as major barriers to digital development. ▶ The most sustainable employer in Germany according to employee ratings in 2023 was Tomorrow, followed by TPL-Escher and Decadis. ▶ Ranking of the most sustainable SMEs in Germany in 2023: 1. elobau 2. In my work with consumer brands at Foresight Strategy, I have seen these challenges again and again - I probably could have written this article about several other CPG companies! 👉 A bifurcation in the market between Private Label and Super Premium offerings that is squeezing legacy players in the Mainstream 👉 Growth coming from price increases at the expense of building sustainable volume 👉 Not focusing investment on the few big brands in the portfolio that drive the business 👉 Too many small innovation projects with no clear big bets for the future Kudos to Unilever for recognizing the issue.
