From fossil to sustainable building blocks; part of the transformation of our energy system is also the transformation of feedstocks, production processes, products, and supporting regulatory frameworks to enable a circular economy. Yesterday I had an inspiring conversation about the development of new circular value chains with Thor Tummers, Michel Kroese, Barend Ubbink, and Inbar van den Burg during Recharge Earth. We shared our belief that close cooperation across the circular value chain, supported by a clear regulatory framework, is needed to accelerate the creation of a circular economy. The challenge to Telcos is to 'Design Out' waste by revising, remaking, refurbishing and recycling devices. Consumers are looking for - and want to do business with - brands who can produce technology designed in a modular way in order to keep those devices in service longer. The science geek in me comes out: I mentioned I love the new CarbonClick logo (see the bottom right) because it resembles a couple of CO2 molecules, but I'm sure my fellow science geeks will smile at the pun below "makes offsetting matter" too. For the non-scientists I'll help you, because we're accessible: "Matter" (in this instance), I'm referring to the mass of Carbon sequestered, by plants using sunlight energy to split CO2 into sequestered carbon (a type of matter, we see as wood and leaves etc (biomass)), and of course the oxygen we breathe (another type of matter).
