NEW INTERVIEW 🎤 As Christian Räth’s new production of Meyerbeer’s Le prophète opens at Fisher Center at Bard, he talks to us about his approach to the work and to directing. ‘Pieces like Le prophète were hugely popular in their time, but they’ve disappeared into no-man’s-land. To bring them back, you have to find a point of view. For me, the most important thing at the start is always the question: what is important about this piece today? How can we create a relationship between today’s audience and a work that has been forgotten? What makes it relevant? You hope the music is great (which it is in this case) but the most crucial thing is to tell a story in a way that is both meaningful and entertaining.’ ‘Some people still enjoy a good old-fashioned opera performance and there’s nothing wrong with that, but in general, directors, designers, performers, creatives – we’re all excited to present something that is new and (hopefully) thrilling to the public. I don’t think we have to push this, because it will happen when people have creative potential and all the talent, tools and skills to make a great performance. Sometimes things can be very simple and ‘homemade’ and still be touching, so I don’t think that it’s only a question of technology. How to draw a staff Drawing a staff, also known as a stave, is a simple process that requires some basic musical knowledge. Here's a step-by-step guide: 1. Start by drawing a set of five lines, evenly spaced and parallel to each other. These lines represent the staff. 2. Add a clef symbol at the beginning of the staff. The most common clefs are the treble clef (looks like an "&" symbol) and the bass clef (looks like a backwards "C" with two dots). 3. Add bar lines to divide the staff into measures. Bar lines are vertical lines that connect the staff lines. 4. Add musical notes, rests, dynamics, and other notation symbols as needed. 5. Finally, add a key signature and time signature if applicable. A PLEASING NIGHT OUT After several years It was a Saturday night-out for me. It’s poetic and it’s classical. I used to be an ardent lover of Pakaj Udhas’ Ghazals, hence my heart always there with the conventional lyrics. It was ‘Bismil ki Mehfil’ at Gachibowli Stadium that mesmerized us with some classical stuff, melodious music, Ghazals and Sufi poetry – with a touch of modern day glitters like laser show, beam lighting, paper & smoke blast.  The show was supported by the latest audio equipment.   I think the world is coming back to classical singing, after chasing loud and noisy ones. (Fortunately or unfortunately I missed that part because I was in a different materialistic world for quite some time!). Most of us assumed that it would be held in the outdoor and would be of low key.  But, as a pleasant surprise, it was more shiny, noisy, lyrical and musical. I was there to look into the new talent, venue strength, the infra & facilities. I am not disappointed. Many years ago I wrote and recorded a 2 hour alternative progressive soft hard experimental concept 2-disc rock opera album. 🎸 I had high hopes. 🕊️ It had: ✅ Great melodies ✅ Great chords ✅ Great key changes The end result? 2 hours of uninspiring noise. 😐 Clearly…it was less than the sum of its parts. In fact, it was so difficult on the ears that the person I paid to review it gave it a negative review. How embarrassing. 👀 ____________________________ I share this because financial planning takes more than good components. It takes synergy. ____________________________ A lot of people come to me because they know something’s off. ❌ Too many accounts ❌ No clear aim ❌ Orphan 401k’s ____________________________ Just because a financial tool is good, doesn’t mean it adds value to the overall plan. I love my clients because we work together to make sure the financial plan is greater than the sum of its parts. When we imagine the ‘perfect presenter’, society tells us to think: - Zero filler words - Perfect pauses - Musical melodies - Unwavering confidence But, that isn’t what makes you engaging. The best speakers: - Have conversations - Share personal stories - Express unbridled passion - Listen as they speak and adjust The former has its place, but is minor in comparison. The latter is not easy, though the first step? Remember, connection over perfection. Then channel your talk from there. PS) Who do you know that embodies that latter list?
